Amazon invests 10 billion euros in Germany

Amazon yesterday announced a significant investment of 10 billion euros in Germany to further expand its logistics network and cloud infrastructure in the country. This investment offensive underscores the company's commitment to Germany as a hub for innovation and business for over 25 years. By the end of the year, 4,000 new jobs will be created in three new logistics centers: Horn-Bad Meinberg (North Rhine-Westphalia) will start operations in late summer 2024, Erfurt (Thuringia) in May 2024, and Großenkneten (Lower Saxony) in August 2023. This will bring Amazon's total workforce in Germany to 40,000 permanent employees by the end of this year. The company offers a wide range of positions at all levels of entry across its over 100 locations in German cities and municipalities.

Just last month, Amazon announced a 7.8 billion euro investment in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud, a new, independent cloud for Europe. Its first region in Germany will be opened in Brandenburg. With today's announcement, Amazon is also reaffirming its planned commitment to the cloud sector and is investing a total of 17.8 billion euros in Germany.

Rocco Bräuniger, Country Manager Amazon Germany, explains: “Amazon came to Germany over 25 years ago, and we continue to invest in the country. With our teams continually focused on innovation, we’re helping German customers transform the way they work, live, connect and thrive. Our teams work hand-in-hand with state-of-the-art technologies to deliver for small businesses and customers, while AWS enables organisations of all sizes in Germany to grow their businesses and innovate using the cloud. And with that comes a positive impact for the country – and especially the communities where we operate – with a broad range of investments and jobs ranging from research and development to logistics and customer service.”

Investments in Research and Development in Germany

Since 2010, Amazon has invested over 77 billion euros in its activities in Germany to support customers, create high-quality jobs and strengthen the German economy. These investments have contributed an estimated 50 billion euros to German GDP. In addition, Amazon has invested in research and development in Germany. Teams at four research and development sites in Aachen, Berlin, Dresden and Tübingen are working on products and services for AWS, Amazon Music, Fire TV, Alexa and logistics technologies. The teams at the Amazon Research and Development Center in Berlin are benefiting from the expansion of labs to develop and improve AI and robotics technologies. Amazon says that many of the innovations teams in Germany co-develop are used by millions of customers worldwide.

Investment in Cloud Infrastructure

As part of Amazon's investments in Germany, AWS plans to invest 8.8 billion euros by 2026 and has been further developing its cloud infrastructure for the AWS Europe (Frankfurt) Region in the Rhine-Main area since 2014. This investment will help meet the growing demand for AWS services in Germany, driven by the potential of cloud computing and AI.

According to a new AWS economic impact study on cloud infrastructure, AWS's investment plan is estimated to contribute 15.4 billion euros to German GDP over this period, while supporting an average of 15,200 full-time jobs per year in the local supply chain. This investment follows last month's announcement that AWS will invest 7.8 billion euros in the AWS European Sovereign Cloud by 2040, with the opening of its first AWS region in Germany. This first region is to be located in the state of Brandenburg.
