AMC Entertainment Holdings said on August 3, 2026 that more than 10.2 million people passed through its cinemas in the United States and its ODEON sites internationally between Wednesday and Sunday, producing what the company describes as the highest single-weekend total revenue in its 106-year history and, on admissions revenue, the highest-grossing weekend the domestic box office has recorded.

The five-day window ran from July 29 to August 2. That framing matters, because it is not the conventional Friday-to-Sunday measure used in most box office reporting. AMC counted from Wednesday because that is when SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY opened at ODEON Cinemas internationally. The domestic debut came a day later, on Thursday.

According to AMC, the weekend set company records in three separate places at once: total revenue, admissions revenue, and food and beverage revenue. Each was a record both domestically and globally.

What the attendance figure does and does not describe

The 10.2 million number covers AMC Theatres in the United States and ODEON Cinemas internationally, combined. AMC did not publish a split between the two. According to the company, the figure represents its highest-attended weekend of the decade in both the domestic and global measures, and the third highest-attended weekend in company history on both.

That last detail is worth holding onto. Revenue reached an all-time high while attendance ranked third. The gap between those two rankings is the arithmetic of ticket pricing and format mix over time, and AMC did not quantify it.

The company operates approximately 850 theatres and 9,500 screens worldwide, according to its own description, and employs more than 30,000 people across the AMC and ODEON estates.

The film that carried the weekend

SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY, directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, opened to a media-reported $355 million domestically and $927 million globally. According to AMC, those figures represent the second highest domestic and second highest global opening weekend gross for any title.

The attribution matters here. AMC described both numbers as media-reported rather than as its own measurement, and neither figure is AMC revenue. They are the film's worldwide theatrical gross across all exhibitors. AMC's own share of that is not disclosed in the announcement.

Adam Aron, AMC's chairman and chief executive, said: "Our sincerest congratulations to director Destin Daniel Cretton, the entire cast and crew, and our friends at Sony Pictures and Marvel Studios on this extraordinary opening weekend for SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY."

Aron also placed the result inside a wider pattern. "This is not a new phenomenon this year," he said. "This is the ninth different movie title since March to have a gangbusters opening-weekend gross."

Nine titles in roughly five months is the more durable statistic in the release. A single record weekend is a function of one film. A run of nine is a function of a release calendar.

Four consecutive daily records

According to AMC, each of the four domestic days produced a record. Thursday generated the highest admissions revenue of any Thursday in AMC Theatres history. Friday did the same for Fridays, Saturday for Saturdays, and Sunday for Sundays.

Consecutive daily records are unusual because they rule out one common explanation. A single record day can reflect a front-loaded opening, with demand collapsing afterwards. Four in sequence indicates the demand curve held across the whole window rather than spiking on one night.

The concession record and its 2019 benchmark

AMC also set a domestic and global record for all-time food and beverage revenue in a single weekend. The previous mark, according to the company, was set during the opening weekend of AVENGERS: ENDGAME in 2019.

Seven years is a long time for a concessions record to stand, and the comparison is instructive for a different reason. Food and beverage revenue is the product of two variables: how many people attend, and how much each spends. Attendance this time ranked third all-time. The concession record therefore implies a higher per-capita spend than in 2019, though AMC did not publish per-capita figures and the release offers no breakdown.

Concessions carry materially higher gross margins than ticket sales in exhibition, because the studio takes a share of admissions revenue and none of the popcorn. A record in that line has a different weight on the profit statement than a record in admissions.

Premium formats did disproportionate work

The clearest structural signal in the announcement sits in the format detail.

According to AMC, the weekend produced the highest-grossing Dolby Cinema at AMC weekend in company history in the United States, and the highest weekend admissions revenue in history for that format. The company attributed this to what it called growing consumer demand for premium theatrical experiences.

IMAX performance ran on a separate track, driven less by the Marvel opening than by Christopher Nolan's THE ODYSSEY, which was in its third weekend. AMC operates more than 200 IMAX screens globally. AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York City ran around-the-clock IMAX 70mm showtimes from Friday through Sunday for the third consecutive weekend.

Twenty-four-hour scheduling in a single auditorium is a capacity constraint made visible. It happens when demand exceeds what a normal operating day can absorb, and it applies only where the print format and projection equipment exist, which in IMAX 70mm means a small number of venues worldwide.

According to AMC, demand held sufficiently that the company, IMAX and Universal Pictures have extended IMAX 70mm engagements of THE ODYSSEY into September at selected locations. The film had been in release for more than two weeks at the point of the announcement.

THE ODYSSEY opened earlier in July 2026 to a domestic debut of approximately $124.5 million, with more than 4.3 million moviegoers attending AMC and ODEON sites over its opening weekend, according to company statements issued at the time. That was the biggest opening weekend for an R-rated film across AMC's United States circuit since 2024.

What the announcement withholds

No dollar figure is attached to any of the three AMC revenue records. The release states that each is an all-time high without disclosing the amount, the prior mark, or the percentage improvement. Per-screen averages are absent. So is the domestic and international split of the 10.2 million admissions.

Timing places the weekend in AMC's third quarter. The company reported second quarter 2026 results for the period ended June 30, 2026, hosting an investor webcast on July 20, 2026, and described that quarter as delivering the highest quarterly revenue and adjusted EBITDA in its 106-year history. The July 29 to August 2 weekend falls outside those figures entirely.

Aron framed the weekend in terms of studio behaviour rather than exhibitor operations. "It is a powerful and unmistakable reminder that audiences overwhelmingly embrace the theatrical experience when studios release films that audiences want to see and support them with strong marketing campaigns," he said.

Why this matters for the marketing community

Cinema occupies an awkward position in most media plans. It is expensive per thousand, geographically lumpy, and impossible to retarget. What it offers in exchange is a captive audience and verified attendance.

The dwell-time argument was set out in detail in PPC Land's analysis of the cinema advertising environment around a major summer release, which noted that pre-show advertising in a long-form IMAX screening occupies a seated audience for ten to fifteen minutes of pre-roll, a dwell period unavailable in any other environment. A weekend in which 10.2 million people sat down in AMC and ODEON auditoriums is, from a media-planning perspective, a delivery number for that inventory.

The measurement argument is separate and arguably stronger. Cinema admissions data derives from actual ticket sales rather than survey panels or modelled estimates, a distinction covered in PPC Land's reporting on what the 2025 box office told marketers. That analysis also documented cinema's reach into the male 18 to 34 segment, a demographic consistently difficult to reach through digital and television channels, and cited North American forecasts of roughly a 10% increase over 2025, pointing towards $9.8bn to $9.9bn in domestic box office gross for 2026. A record weekend in early August is a data point in favour of that forecast holding.

Set against the television side, the contrast sharpens. Streaming now accounts for 66.7% of ad-supported television viewing time among adults 18 to 49, with connected television advertising spend reaching $33.35bn in 2025 and its share of media budgets doubling from 14% in 2023 to 28% in 2025. Some 78% of advertisers said addressable television would factor into their 2026 upfront negotiations. Budget is moving towards CTV at scale, and cinema is competing for attention against a channel with far better targeting and far worse dwell time.

The out-of-home comparison runs in a similar direction. US out-of-home advertising spend is forecast at $4bn in 2026, up 4.1%, with digital formats growing 14.5% while traditional formats add 1.5%Programmatic digital out-of-home is projected to appear in 48% of all campaigns within eighteen months. Cinema screens have not been absorbed into that automated buying infrastructure on comparable terms, which is part of why exhibitor attendance figures still arrive as press releases rather than as inventory forecasts inside a demand-side platform.

Distribution economics are moving underneath all of this. The European Commission cleared the Paramount Skydance acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery on July 22, 2026, but only after requiring Paramount to exit the United International Pictures joint venture across 19 European Economic Area countries within 13 months, alongside a ten-year ban on jointly co-distributing films with Universal or Disney. The Commission's stated concern was that joint distribution would worsen rental and distribution terms for cinema operators. Exhibitor economics of the kind AMC reported on August 3 sit directly downstream of those terms.

One caution applies to reading any of this as a trend. AMC's own framing points to nine strong openings since March, which is a supply-side observation about the release calendar rather than a demand-side observation about audience behaviour. A calendar can thin out. The 2026 slate is unusually dense, and the attendance figures that follow from it are not automatically repeatable in a year with fewer tentpoles.

Timeline

Summary

Who: AMC Entertainment Holdings, the largest theatrical exhibitor in the United States and worldwide, operating AMC Theatres domestically and ODEON Cinemas internationally, with Adam Aron as chairman and chief executive. Sony Pictures, Marvel Studios, IMAX and Universal Pictures appear as named counterparties.

What: All-time company records for single-weekend total revenue, admissions revenue and food and beverage revenue, both domestically and globally, on more than 10.2 million admissions. Individual all-time records were set for Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday admissions revenue, and for Dolby Cinema at AMC weekend admissions revenue. SPIDER-MAN: BRAND NEW DAY opened to a media-reported $355 million domestic and $927 million global gross, the second highest on both measures for any title. No dollar amounts were disclosed for AMC's own record figures.

When: The trading window ran Wednesday July 29 to Sunday August 2, 2026. AMC issued the announcement on August 3, 2026 at 7:29 AM Eastern Daylight Time.

Where: AMC Theatres locations across the United States and ODEON Cinemas internationally, spanning approximately 850 theatres and 9,500 screens, including more than 200 IMAX screens globally and AMC Lincoln Square 13 in New York City.

Why: The results give exhibition a concrete counterweight to the argument that theatrical attendance is in structural decline, and they arrive as cinema competes for budget against connected television and programmatic out-of-home, both of which offer better targeting and worse dwell time. The concession record, standing since 2019, points to per-capita spending rather than raw attendance as the operative variable, while AMC's own framing of nine strong openings since March locates the cause in the 2026 release calendar rather than in a permanent shift in audience behaviour.
