Today, Google expanded Funding Choices to more 31 countries. The publisher service from Google News, created in 2017, is now available in the USA, in Australia, Germany, New Zealand, Austria, Greece, Norway, Belgium, Hungary, Poland, Bulgaria, Iceland, Portugal, Canada, Ireland, Romania, Croatia, Italy, Slovakia, Cyprus, Latvia, Slovenia, Czech Republic, Liechtenstein, Spain, Denmark, Lithuania, Sweden, Estonia, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Finland, Malta, United Kingdom, France, Netherlands.
According to Google, Funding Choices allowed publishers to “show a customized message to visitors using an ad blocker, inviting them to either enable ads on their site, or pay for a pass that removes all ads on that site through the new Google Contributor.”
Google is now more flexible and today updated the options for publishers:
- A dismissible message that doesn’t restrict access to content.
- A dismissible message that counts and limits the number of page views that person is allowed per month, as determined by the site owner, before the content is blocked.
- Or, a message that blocks access to content until the visitor chooses to allow ads on the site, or to pay to access the content with either the site’s proprietary subscription service or a pass that removes all ads on that site through Google Contributor.
Google says that “on average, publishers using Funding Choices are seeing 16 percent of visitors allow ads on their sites with some seeing rates as high as 37 percent.” Publishers apply for Funding Choices here.
