Reddit's new AI search struggles with recent events

Reddit unveiled a new AI-powered search feature earlier this month, marking a significant development in the platform's efforts to enhance its search capabilities. Testing conducted by Business Insider identified significant challenges with recent information retrieval. When queried about a New Orleans Saints game on December 15, the system failed to locate current information. A rephrased question generated a summary from a three-month-old game in September.
The system demonstrated similar limitations with current events. A query about actor Blake Lively on December 26 produced outdated information from August, failing to acknowledge recent developments. The response focused on a premiere event from five months prior, missing substantial current news.
However, Reddit Answers showed proficiency in analyzing complex topics with multiple viewpoints. When asked about universal basic income, the system successfully aggregated diverse perspectives from various subreddits, presenting three pros and three cons with linked sources. These references spanned multiple communities, including r/casualconversations, r/neutralpolitics, and r/basicincome.
Source verification revealed varying levels of citation quality. Some Reddit posts referenced academic sources, including a Stanford University article, while others contained broken links. The temporal range of sources extended from recent posts to discussions from six years ago, with older content sometimes receiving multiple citations.
The platform's architecture reflects Reddit's strategic positioning against traditional search engines. By processing information from its vast user base, Reddit Answers attempts to leverage the platform's extensive discussion archives. However, the current implementation suggests a significant gap between ambition and execution, particularly regarding real-time information processing.
