Asset optimization is the name Google Ads gives to a group of campaign settings that allow its systems to change, extend or generate the creative an advertiser supplies. In a Performance Max or Demand Gen campaign, the advertiser uploads headlines, descriptions, images, videos and a landing page address. Asset optimization decides whether Google may write new text from the landing page, send a click to a different page on the same site, crop and animate the images, cut and reframe the videos, or build new videos from still images. It exists because automated campaigns serve across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps, each with its own formats and aspect ratios, and few advertisers produce a complete set of creative for every slot. The phrase also describes the manual practice of replacing weak assets after reading asset reports, but in Google Ads it now means mainly the settings panel.
Where the settings sit
In an existing Performance Max campaign the controls are reached through the campaign's settings page, under a menu labelled "Asset optimization", which opens tiles for text, images and video, according to Google's help page on image enhancements. The text tile carries two checkboxes, Generation and Final URL. The image tile carries Enhancement. The video tile also carries Enhancement, according to Google's video automation documentation. In Demand Gen the same heading appears inside the media card of each ad, because Demand Gen applies most of these controls at ad level rather than campaign level.
Behind the interface, the Google Ads application programming interface (API) stores each choice as an entry in an asset_automation_settings array, pairing an automation type with a status of OPTED_IN or OPTED_OUT. Google's asset automation settings guide, which references API version 26, lists six campaign-level types:
- TEXT_ASSET_AUTOMATION - text customization. Enabled by default for Performance Max, disabled by default for Search.
- FINAL_URL_EXPANSION_TEXT_ASSET_AUTOMATION - final URL expansion. Enabled by default for Performance Max, disabled for Search.
- GENERATE_IMAGE_ENHANCEMENT - image enhancement in Performance Max. Enabled.
- GENERATE_ENHANCED_YOUTUBE_VIDEOS - video enhancement in Performance Max. Enabled.
- GENERATE_IMAGE_EXTRACTION - pulling images from the landing page. Follows the account-level dynamic image setting.
- AUTOMATED_VIDEO_CRAWL - available from version 25, disabled by default.
Seven ad-level types cover Demand Gen formats, from vertical and shorter YouTube videos to animated images. All but the landing page preview are enabled by default.
How each control works
Text customization, which Google's help pages say was "formerly known as Automatically created assets", generates headlines and descriptions from the landing page, existing ads and generative AI, according to Google's text customization help page. Generated assets enter the same pool as advertiser-written ones and are labelled "Google AI" in the "Added by" column. Removal is permanent.
Final URL expansion lets the system replace the supplied landing page with one it predicts is more relevant, and write a matching dynamic headline. It cannot run without text customization: the Final URL checkbox is greyed out unless text generation is on, and Google's Performance Max optimisation guide for developers states that URL expansion is on by default for all Performance Max campaigns. Exclusions are set as webpage criteria.
Image enhancement adjusts uploaded images "to scale across advertising inventory and formats", according to Google. In practice that covers cropping, aspect-ratio changes and, in Demand Gen, text overlays and animation. PPC Land's explainer on smart cropping notes that API version 22, released on October 15, 2025, documented auto-cropping under the image enhancement type.
Video enhancement produces vertical and square versions of horizontal videos and shorter cuts. Google says only versions that pass quality review are added. In Demand Gen, Google described two models in November 2025: one that crops to 1:1 and 9:16, and one that uses generative AI to extend the frame into new ratios.
A worked example shows the effect. A retailer uploads five headlines, two URLs and one 16:9 video. With defaults on, the campaign can serve Google-written headlines, send a click to a category page the retailer never listed, and show a 9:16 version of the video containing pixels the camera never captured. None of these variants needs approval before serving.
Origin and evolution
The building blocks predate the label. Responsive search ads, which assemble headlines and descriptions per query, replaced expanded text ads as the only creatable Search format when Google blocked new expanded text ads on June 30, 2022, according to the Google Ads Developer Blog. On September 15, 2022, Google renamed ad extensions as "assets", according to a Google post by Tal Akabas, group product manager, which made "asset" the general unit of creative in the platform.
Automatically created assets went into open beta for English-language responsive search ads during Google's Search Ads Week in 2022, according to Search Engine Land, which reported an average 2% conversion increase at similar cost per conversion for early adopters. Generative AI was fully rolled out in the feature for US and UK English advertisers in February 2024.
Performance Max, which reached general availability in November 2021, shipped with final URL expansion from the start. Over 2025 and 2026 Google layered on controls meant to limit what the automation could say. Brand guidelines for colours and fonts were rolled out to all interface-built campaigns by July 2025. Text guidelines arrived on September 10, 2025, allowing up to 25 term exclusions and 40 natural-language messaging restrictions per campaign, but only when text customization is on. The beta went global in February 2026.
Demand Gen got its own asset optimization defaults in 2025. Google applied optimization to all existing and new Demand Gen image ads from September 4, 2025, unless advertisers opted out, according to Search Engine Land. The panel was redesigned in March 2026 to group shorter videos, resized videos and landing-page images under single toggles, Search Engine Land reported. In October 2026 an "Overlay on videos" checkbox appeared beside them, on by default for existing advertisers, according to TechWyse.
Why it matters
For advertisers the significance lies in the defaults. Most of these controls are switched on unless someone switches them off, and several have arrived in existing accounts with short notice. Google told advertisers that AI voice-overs would be added to Performance Max videos without a spoken track from March 20, 2026, giving roughly ten days to change a campaign-level setting. On October 21, 2026, Google said new Performance Max campaigns would default to image extraction from December 4, "even if Dynamic Image Extensions are disabled" at account level. The same notice warned API developers that writing new settings "replaces the entire array rather than merging", so a script that updates one automation type can silently clear the others.
The settings also tie into bidding and query matching. When Google moved campaigns that used automatically created assets into AI Max for Search from September 1, 2026, it switched on both search term matching and text customization for them. Measurement has followed: asset A/B testing opened to all Performance Max campaigns in January 2026.
Limitations and disputes
The central complaint is control. Advertisers in regulated sectors have to clear every claim in an ad, yet generated headlines and expanded URLs serve without pre-approval. Final URL expansion can also break tracking: static tracking templates without an {lpurl} parameter can send users to the tracking destination, and some nonstandard constructions produce 404 errors. Text guidelines only cover exact-match terms, with no partial-word matching.
Quality is the second. Google Shopping's smart cropping was reported in November 2025 to distort product images, with the setting on by default and removable only through support. Manuel Arrufat, a Google Ads consultant, argued that a shared AI voice across advertisers would erode distinctiveness.
The third is evidence. Google's own figures, such as the 2% conversion gain for automatically created assets, come from internal data. Independent analysis has questioned Google's guidance on creative: an Optmyzr study of more than 1 million ads from over 22,000 accounts, published in September 2024, found no meaningful correlation between Ad Strength and results, with "average" ads often beating "excellent" ones on cost per acquisition. Liability is the fourth. Meta's revised terms make advertisers "solely responsible" for what its AI features change from October 30, 2026, including features Meta turns on itself.
Asset optimization versus related terms
Dynamic creative optimization (DCO) assembles ads from a template and a data feed at serve time, usually in an ad server or creative management platform, and was built for display and video buying through demand-side platforms. Asset optimization generates or modifies the creative itself inside a single platform. PPC Land's DCO explainer covers the older technique.
Ad Strength is a diagnostic rating (Poor to Excellent) of how complete and varied an ad's assets are. Google states it is not an auction input. Asset optimization changes what serves; Ad Strength only grades the inputs.
Creative enhancements is the term Meta and OpenAI use for comparable settings. OpenAI planned to switch creative enhancements on by default for ChatGPT self-serve campaigns at the end of October 2026.
Outside advertising, asset optimization also refers to managing physical plant and equipment in utilities and manufacturing, and to compressing images, scripts and fonts to speed up web pages. Neither sense relates to the Google Ads setting.
Recent developments
Google said on August 17, 2026 that it would generate missing vertical and square versions of horizontal Performance Max videos by default, with an opt-out deadline of September 4, according to PPC Land's smart cropping explainer. The image extraction default takes effect on December 4, 2026, and Demand Gen's video overlay was added in October. Across platforms the pattern is the same: generated creative is on by default, the off switch sits at campaign or ad level, and responsibility for the output sits with the advertiser.

Summary
Who: Google operates asset optimization in Google Ads; advertisers and agencies running Performance Max, Demand Gen and AI Max campaigns decide whether to keep its defaults. Meta and OpenAI run comparable "creative enhancement" settings.
What: A group of settings that let Google generate text, expand landing pages, and crop, extend, animate, shorten or voice over images and videos supplied by advertisers.
When: The components date from 2021 (final URL expansion) and 2022 (automatically created assets), with most image and video controls added between 2024 and 2026. Image extraction becomes default for new Performance Max campaigns on December 4, 2026.
Where: In the Asset optimization menu of Performance Max campaign settings, in each Demand Gen ad's media card, and in the asset_automation_settings field of the Google Ads API.
Why: Automated campaigns serve across many formats that advertisers rarely fill with bespoke creative. The settings fill the gaps, at the cost of brand control, tracking reliability and review before serving.
