Facebook updated yesterday the News Feed so local news are prioritized, in the same month when news were demoted on the Facebook News Feed. Alex Hardiman, Head of News Product and Campbell Brown, Head of News Partnerships, says that they expect users “see topics that have a direct impact on you and your community and discover what’s happening in your local area.”
This changed “is taking effect in the US.” Facebook is saying that the plan is “to expand to more countries this year.”
How Facebook identifies a local news publisher? “Facebook identifies local publishers as those whose links are clicked on by readers in a tight geographic area.”
How content show up higher in News Feed? “If a story is from a publisher in an area, and users either follow the publisher’s Page or the friends share a story from that outlet, it might show up higher in News Feed.”
