AdRoll today opened a pilot that lets a selected group of its customers buy sponsored placements inside ChatGPT, six months after OpenAI began selling advertising inside the assistant.
AdRoll, the San Francisco advertising platform that dropped the NextRoll corporate name in August 2025, said today that a limited set of AdRoll and AdRoll ABM customers can test advertising in ChatGPT. The announcement, dated August 11, 2026 and issued from San Francisco, describes the participants as small and mid-sized businesses, mid-market advertisers and business-to-business marketers.
Access is deliberately gated. According to AdRoll, advertising in ChatGPT is currently available to a select group of participating AdRoll and AdRoll ABM customers and is not broadly available across the company's full customer base. Existing customers interested in the pilot are directed to their AdRoll customer success manager.
The company disclosed no participant count, no spend commitment, no pricing detail and no performance figures. It did not name a single pilot advertiser, nor did it say when or whether the pilot widens to the rest of its base.
What the announcement says, and what it withholds
The framing is about placement in a media plan rather than about a product feature list. AdRoll said it will help participating advertisers understand how advertising in conversational AI platforms fits within the customer journey and how it can work alongside existing media investments rather than operate as a standalone experiment. The company also said it will supply campaign expertise and support to participants.
That is the substance of the operational commitment. Everything else in the announcement is positioning.
"Conversational AI platforms are creating an entirely new environment that enable marketers to participate in the moments when options are being discovered, preferences are being formed, and decisions are taking shape," said Vibhor Kapoor, chief executive officer of AdRoll. "Marketers need to understand the impact conversational AI can have on the middle of the customer journey and how it complements the channels they already use to build awareness and capture demand. AdRoll is helping SMB, mid-market and B2B advertisers approach this opportunity as part of a connected strategy rather than another isolated media experiment."
Hans Fischmann, vice president of product at AdRoll, offered the only qualitative read on results so far. "It is not every day that a new channel emerges, let alone one that's tied to how people actively explore and evaluate their options through AI," Fischmann said. "The early signal is encouraging, and we are seeing ChatGPT show up across both awareness and performance goals. We are excited to help our customers test what this channel can deliver."
No metric accompanies that assessment. Neither executive quantified reach, cost, conversion rate or campaign volume.
How the placements behave
Per AdRoll's description, advertisements inside ChatGPT are designed to appear below the end of a response when contextually appropriate, or based on the user's experience in the assistant. They appear separately from the answer and do not influence what the model says. OpenAI keeps user conversations private from advertisers and does not sell user data to advertisers, according to the same announcement, which cites what it calls the unbiased and honest nature of the experience as described by OpenAI.
The mechanics behind that description are already documented. Advertisements appear at the bottom of ChatGPT responses when a relevant sponsored product or service matches the conversation topic, with the system matching advertiser submissions against the subject of the current conversation, past chat history and previous interactions with advertisements. Placements are labelled as sponsored and separated visually from organic output.
The buying structure inside OpenAI's own interface follows a three-tier hierarchy of campaign, ad group and ad. The campaign carries objective, budget, dates and targeting. The ad group carries context hints, which are phrases describing the kinds of conversations where an advertiser's products may be relevant. The individual creative unit consists of a title, description copy, an image asset and a landing page URL. That is a narrower set of levers than a display or paid search advertiser is accustomed to, and it puts unusual weight on the context hint.
Six months of infrastructure preceded this pilot
The channel AdRoll is entering did not exist for advertisers in January. OpenAI confirmed on January 16, 2026 that it would test advertising in ChatGPT's free and Go subscription tiers, and the pilot formally began on February 9, 2026 in the United States.
Revenue arrived quickly. The pilot crossed 100 million dollars in annualised revenue within six weeks, with more than 600 advertisers on board by late March, roughly 85 percent of users eligible to see advertisements and fewer than 20 percent encountering one on a given day. Nearly 80 percent of small and medium-sized businesses surveyed expressed interest in buying placements, a figure that has hovered over the channel since.
Then came the cost reductions. Cost per mille fell from 60 dollars to as low as 25 dollars on April 17, 2026, and the minimum spend threshold dropped to 50,000 dollars. On May 5, OpenAI opened its self-serve Ads Manager beta to all United States businesses, removed the minimum spend entirely and introduced cost-per-click bidding with a recommended starting bid of 3 to 5 dollars. A Conversions API and pixel-based measurement landed alongside it. Five days earlier, an updated United States privacy policy had disclosed in binding language that OpenAI receives purchase data from advertisers and their partners.
The feature accumulation continued through the summer. Custom audience uploads surfaced in a gated rollout on May 14, later constrained by a 25,000 matched-user floor before an audience can be used. Daily budgets and geographic targeting by state, designated market area and ZIP code arrived on May 22. Conversion-optimised campaigns began rolling out on June 5. ChatGPT advertising went live in the United Kingdom on June 6, the first European market, followed by Japan and South Korea on June 22. LiveRamp connected its Conversions API Hub on June 10. AppsFlyer and Adjust brought mobile install attribution to seven markets in late July.
Two changes from July sit directly in front of any advertiser starting now. Fixed daily budgets converted into seven-day averages without advertiser action and without a published single-day overspend ceiling. And automatic advanced matching is scheduled to switch on for existing web pixels on August 17, 2026, six days after the AdRoll pilot was made public.
The demand picture is uneven
Advertiser counts have become measurable. Search intelligence firm Adthena observed 7,378 distinct advertisers inside ChatGPT during the week of July 13 to 20, 2026, with the United States accounting for 60.1 percent of them and placements reported to have grown 97 times between April and June.
Set against that, the same firm recorded zero paid ChatGPT placements across 169,560 United Kingdom result scrapes during June 2026. Measurement infrastructure has been assembled faster than demand has arrived in several markets, and third-party datasets do not agree with one another.
Click-through rates remain thin by the standards of search. Similarweb data summarised on May 5 put the overall ChatGPT click-through rate at 0.68 percent, with the top quartile at 1 percent and the best-performing brands at 1.57 percent.
Conversion data points the other way, though the sourcing is narrow. Criteo, the first ad tech company formally identified as an OpenAI technology partner in March, reported that users referred from ChatGPT convert at roughly 1.5 times the rate of other referral channels across a sample of 500 United States retailers, and later reported 2,000 brands running campaigns through its connection. Those figures come from a vendor reporting on its own client base. Independent verification at scale has not been published.
Where AdRoll sits in the buying stack
OpenAI has operated two parallel routes into the channel. One is the self-serve Ads Manager. The other is a technology partner route in which the partner handles budgeting, bidding and creative while OpenAI retains control over delivery decisions. That partner roster has consisted of Adobe, Criteo, Kargo, Pacvue and StackAdapt, with holding companies Dentsu, Omnicom, Publicis and WPP supporting campaigns separately.
AdRoll's announcement does not describe the company as an OpenAI technology partner. It describes a pilot for its own customers, with AdRoll supplying campaign expertise and support. The distinction matters for anyone trying to work out what is actually being sold: the announcement establishes access and services, not a formal position on OpenAI's published partner list.
The stated rationale is resourcing. According to AdRoll, the pilot is designed to bring an emerging advertising opportunity to SMB, mid-market and B2B marketers that may not have the resources or specialised expertise required to test a new channel independently. That gap is real enough in practice. Context hints, pixel deployment, conversions plumbing, audience match thresholds and a budget system that changed its own definition nine weeks after launch add up to operational overhead that a two-person marketing team absorbs badly.
The platform behind the pilot
AdRoll positions the pilot as an extension of existing investment rather than a departure. The company cited privacy-forward measurement intended to keep campaign insight reliable as cookies and browser-based tracking degrade, expansion into connected television and digital out-of-home, and Model Context Protocol integrations that connect AdRoll and AdRoll ABM to AI assistants and agentic workflows.
Each of those has a documented history. The company consolidated RollWorks into AdRoll ABM and launched an AI Assistant on August 27, 2025, collapsing two brands into one platform. It integrated HUMAN Security in October 2025 for pre-bid fraud detection and viewability measurement, with invalid traffic detection inside 12 milliseconds. It reached 200 brands activating Experian syndicated audiences across web and connected TV by October 21, 2025, drawing on more than 3,200 ready-to-use audiences. Its connected TV product launched in April 2025.
The MCP work is the most directly relevant precedent. On April 23, 2026, AdRoll and PubMatic announced an integration in which AdRoll's AI agents query PubMatic's deal diagnostics in real time, pulling root-cause analysis on delivery failures and surfacing corrective actions without manual log exports or support tickets. It was one of the first public implementations of bidirectional agent communication across the demand and supply sides of the programmaticstack.
The budget argument underneath
AdRoll's own market data supplies the commercial logic for testing a new middle-funnel channel. The company's Q1 2026 State of Digital Advertising report recorded display retargeting costs rising 18 percent in January and February against the same period in 2025, while display prospecting CPMs fell 11 percent. Account-based marketing CPMs fell 8.5 percent year over year across the same interval.
Read together, those figures describe upper-funnel web display losing advertiser appetite while lower-funnel retargeting inventory becomes more expensive. A channel that claims to sit between the two is commercially convenient for a platform whose core business spans both. Whether conversational placements actually occupy that middle ground, or simply capture demand that search would have captured anyway, is the question the pilot exists to test and the one neither executive quote answers.
Why it matters for the marketing community
The significance is one of distribution rather than invention. ChatGPT advertising has been buyable since February, self-serve since May, and internationally available since June. What has been missing for smaller advertisers is not access but managed capacity: someone to run the campaign, interpret the results and connect the channel to spend already running elsewhere.
That is the gap AdRoll is addressing, and it follows a pattern the ad tech sector has repeated at every channel transition. Large advertisers arrive first through direct relationships or holding companies. Technology partners then wrap the channel in tooling. Mid-market and small business demand follows once someone packages it. The compression here is the notable part: six months from pilot launch to a mid-market packaging play, against the multi-year timelines that accompanied Google and Meta at comparable stages.
The counterweight is that the evidence base remains thin and vendor-supplied. Conversion claims come from platforms with an interest in the answer. Click-through rates are below one percent. One market has registered no measurable paid placements at all. And an advertiser entering now inherits a budget system that stopped being a hard cap in July and a pixel that begins matching hashed customer data automatically on August 17 unless the setting is changed.
AdRoll's pilot puts a services layer between smaller advertisers and that volatility. It does not remove the volatility.

Summary
Who: AdRoll, the San Francisco multi-channel advertising platform formerly operating as NextRoll, announced the pilot. Vibhor Kapoor, chief executive officer, and Hans Fischmann, vice president of product, provided the company's commentary. Participants are a selected group of existing AdRoll and AdRoll ABM customers across small business, mid-market and business-to-business segments.
What: A pilot enabling those selected customers to buy sponsored placements inside ChatGPT, with AdRoll supplying campaign expertise and support. Placements appear below the end of a ChatGPT response, separated from the answer and without influencing it. The company disclosed no participant numbers, spend levels or performance metrics, and stated the pilot is not broadly available across its customer base.
When: Announced today, August 11, 2026, six months after OpenAI's ChatGPT advertising pilot began on February 9, 2026, and six days before automatic advanced matching switches on for existing ChatGPT web pixels on August 17.
Where: San Francisco, with AdRoll serving customers across ecommerce, technology, financial services and education. ChatGPT advertising currently operates in the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Japan and South Korea.
Why: Conversational assistants have become a research and evaluation surface, and AdRoll argues that smaller advertisers lack the resources and specialised expertise to test the channel alone. The company's own Q1 2026 data showed retargeting CPMs rising 18 percent while prospecting CPMs fell 11 percent, a pattern that makes a middle-funnel channel commercially attractive to a platform selling both ends of the funnel.
