OpenAI told ChatGPT Ads advertisers that automatic advanced matching becomes the default on existing web pixels from August 17, 2026, in a product update email that also opened conversion-optimised bidding to product feed campaigns and confirmed a multi-product carousel test.

OpenAI distributed a product update email to ChatGPT Ads advertisers during the week beginning August 3, 2026, setting out nine changes to its advertising stack. The single item carrying a hard date sits near the bottom of the list: automatic advanced matching, a technique that uses hashed customer information collected from website forms to attribute more conversions to ads, is now switched on by default for newly created web pixels, and on August 17, 2026 it will be switched on for pixels that already exist.

Advertisers who do not want the feature running on their existing pixels have until that Monday to disable it, through the Tools menu, then Conversions, then Data Source, then Edit pixel. No action is required to accept the change. That structure - opt-out rather than opt-in, with a fixed calendar date - is the mechanism platforms have long used to move a large installed base onto a new default without renegotiating each account.

Barry Schwartz published the contents of the email on X on August 5, 2026, and Search Engine Roundtable carried a consolidated account today.

What conversion-optimised CPC means for feed campaigns

The headline item in OpenAI's own framing concerns bidding. Conversion-optimised cost-per-click campaigns, known as oCPC, are now available in beta for product feed campaigns. According to OpenAI, this initial release supports click-billed campaigns using fixed or manual bidding with a positive conversion bid cap.

The technical detail matters more than the label. Under a click-billed model with conversion optimisation layered on top, the advertiser still pays per click, but the auction ranking incorporates a prediction of conversion likelihood. The positive conversion bid cap is the ceiling on what the system will value a predicted conversion at. Fixed or manual bidding remains the input, which distinguishes this release from a fully automated target-cost-per-acquisition product of the kind that Google Ads and Meta have offered for years.

Two operational additions accompany it. Existing CPC campaigns can be cloned into new oCPC campaigns, and oCPC campaigns can be created in bulk. During cloning, according to OpenAI, Ads Manager prefills the conversion event when a single eligible event is available, and otherwise prompts for a selection. For agencies managing dozens of campaign structures, bulk creation and cloning are the difference between a channel that can be operated at scale and one that requires manual reconstruction of every line item.

The conversion objective itself is not new. Conversion-optimised campaigns began rolling out on June 5, 2026, gated on advertisers having at least one conversion event flowing through the Pixel or Conversions API by June 1. What changes now is the campaign type that can use it. Product feed campaigns, which generate ad units automatically from a retailer's catalogue, had been running on click objectives alone.

Dynamic URL parameters arrive

OpenAI added support for macros in landing page query parameters. The supported set includes {campaign_id}, {ad_group_id}, {ad_id} and {ad_account_id}, with values populated automatically at delivery time.

This is unglamorous plumbing with disproportionate consequences. Without delivery-time macros, an advertiser wanting to distinguish traffic from one ChatGPT ad group from another had to hard-code separate tracking strings into every landing page URL and maintain that mapping by hand. Macro support means a single URL template resolves correctly across an entire account, and it means ChatGPT ad traffic can be segmented inside analytics platforms that were never built with the channel in mind. Every major search and social platform has offered equivalent functionality for a decade. Its absence until August 2026 is a measure of how recently this advertising product came into existence.

Measurement partners widen

Two third-party integrations appeared in the same email. Triple Whale now connects to ChatGPT Ads, allowing performance to be measured alongside other channels, and the company's Sonar Optimize product is available for ChatGPT Ads, which according to OpenAI helps brands send stronger conversion signals back to OpenAI. Separately, Hightouch now supports sending conversion events to ChatGPT Ads for measurement and optimisation.

Both additions sit on the same foundation. LiveRamp connected its Conversions API Hub to ChatGPT on June 10, 2026, becoming the first third-party server-side measurement route into the platform. AppsFlyer and Adjust went live with app install attribution across seven markets in late July, covering mobile rather than web. Triple Whale and Hightouch extend the roster into direct-to-consumer commerce analytics and customer data infrastructure respectively.

Pixel diagnostics also improved. Ads Manager now surfaces additional validation detail, including the reason events were dropped before being sent, the affected field, the error type, and a recommended fix, accessible through Tools, then Conversions, and a diagnostics panel on the right of the screen. Dropped conversion events are one of the most common causes of a measurement gap between a platform's reported performance and an advertiser's own numbers, and until now the ChatGPT pixel gave no explanation for them.

The August 17 default

Automatic advanced matching is the change with the clearest privacy and compliance dimension. The technique captures identifiers that users enter into website forms, hashes them client-side, and transmits them alongside the conversion event so that the platform can match a conversion to an ad exposure with greater confidence than a cookie or click identifier alone permits.

Meta's version of the same mechanism has been standard in its pixel for years. What is notable in the ChatGPT case is the sequencing. The feature was already flagged in OpenAI's July 24 product update email, which also converted fixed daily budgets into seven-day averages and introduced geographic exclusions and a bulk API. The August email sets the date on which the default extends backwards to cover pixels installed before the change.

The compliance question is not resolved by the platform. An advertiser operating in a jurisdiction with consent requirements remains responsible for establishing a lawful basis for transmitting hashed form data to a third party, regardless of which side of the toggle the default sits on. ChatGPT advertising is not yet live in continental Europe, where the General Data Protection Regulation and the Digital Markets Act would apply directly, but advertisers in the United Kingdom operate under an equivalent consent regime.

Brazil and Mexico complete the May list

According to OpenAI, ChatGPT Ads will launch in Brazil and Mexico in the coming week, giving advertisers with business in those markets a new opportunity to expand their reach.

Those two countries are the last outstanding entries on a list that OpenAI VP of Monetization Benji Shomair set out on May 7, 2026, when he named the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico as the next markets for the advertising pilot. The United Kingdom activated on June 6, and Japan and South Korea followed on June 22 alongside self-serve access for British advertisers. Brazil and Mexico had been listed as pending in AppsFlyer's own integration documentation as recently as late July.

Completion of that list would take the pilot to nine countries: the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Japan, South Korea, Brazil and Mexico. Continental Europe remains absent.

The final item confirms in OpenAI's own words what commerce specialists had already observed in the wild. The company has started testing a carousel format for product feed ads that shows multiple products from an advertiser in a single unit.

The example image circulated with the email shows a fictional retailer, Harbor Home, with three furniture items in one placement: a sectional at $1,299.00 marked down from $1,899.00, a sofa at $899.00 from $1,299.00, and a chair at $599.00, each carrying a five-star rating and a short descriptive line. The unit is labelled as an advertisement.

Brodie Clark, writing on X on August 7, 2026, described the format as live. "Whoa, this is big news for advertising in ChatGPT for eCommerce stores. The new product feed ads carousel unit is now live!" Clark wrote. He added that he had been increasing discussion and testing with clients inside ChatGPT, and that the release would further accelerate interest.

Structurally, the carousel breaks the one-advertiser, one-product constraint that has defined the ChatGPT ad unit since the pilot began. It also raises the value of catalogue hygiene. When titles, prices, images, discount pricing and star ratings are rendered directly into the placement, feed accuracy becomes creative accuracy. PPC Land has previously documented that none of OpenAI's advertising job listings was scoped specifically to merchant feed data quality, even as feed-based campaigns were described among the platform's stronger performers.

Why this matters

Six months separate the February 9, 2026 launch of ChatGPT advertising from this week's email. In that window the platform has acquired a self-serve Ads Manager with CPC bidding, a Conversions API and pixel, custom audience targetingdaily budgets and geo-targetingproduct feed campaigns, conversion optimisation, third-party measurement, mobile attribution, a bulk API, and now macros, cloning and a shopping-style carousel.

Read as a sequence rather than as isolated releases, the pattern is the systematic reconstruction of a mature search advertising platform inside a conversational interface. Each individual addition is unremarkable by the standards of Google Ads. Collectively they remove the reasons a performance buyer would give for not testing the channel.

Demand data remains uneven. Adthena counted 7,378 distinct advertisers inside ChatGPT during the week of July 13 to 20, 2026, with the United States accounting for 60.1% of them and placements reported to have grown 97 times between April and June. The same firm recorded zero paid ChatGPT placements across 169,560 United Kingdom scrapes during June 2026, and documented United Kingdom cost-per-click swings of 278% with no published explanation. Pricing has moved a long way in the other direction from launch, with CPMs falling from $60 to as low as $25 by mid-April 2026.

For media buyers, the August 17 date is the item requiring a decision rather than an assessment. Everything else in the email adds capability. Automatic advanced matching changes what data leaves an advertiser's website by default, and the window to review that before it applies to existing pixels closes on a Monday.

Timeline

Summary

Who: OpenAI, operator of ChatGPT Ads Manager, communicating with advertisers in the beta programme. The changes affect retailers running product feed campaigns, performance agencies, and any advertiser operating a ChatGPT web pixel. Measurement vendors Triple Whale and Hightouch are named as new integration partners. Barry Schwartz of Search Engine Roundtable published the email contents; consultant Brodie Clark independently reported the carousel unit live.

What: Nine product changes, comprising conversion-optimised cost-per-click in beta for product feed campaigns, campaign cloning and bulk oCPC creation, dynamic URL macros for campaign, ad group, ad and account identifiers, Triple Whale and Sonar Optimize integration, Hightouch conversion API support, expanded pixel validation diagnostics, automatic advanced matching as a default, imminent market launches in Brazil and Mexico, and a test of a multi-product carousel format for product feed ads.

When: The email was distributed during the week beginning August 3, 2026, with its contents published on X on August 5 and reported in consolidated form on August 7. Automatic advanced matching applies to existing web pixels from August 17, 2026. Brazil and Mexico are described as launching in the coming week.

Where: ChatGPT Ads Manager, at present operating across the United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Japan and South Korea, with Brazil and Mexico pending. Continental Europe remains outside the pilot.

Why: Advertiser demand for conversion-based buying and reliable attribution has outpaced the platform's original awareness-and-traffic tooling. The additions bring ChatGPT Ads closer to feature parity with established search and social platforms ahead of the fourth quarter, while the automatic advanced matching default shifts what data leaves an advertiser's site unless the setting is changed before August 17.
