Amazon created the Polly plugin to transform text into voice on WordPress

Amazon launched 3 days ago a new plugin for WordPress, the most popular Content Manager System (CMS) in the world. The new plugin is called Amazon Polly and is a service that turns text into lifelike speech. The plugin was designed by Amazon’s AWS team and by WP Engine.

According to the description on the wordpress plugin, “the Amazon Polly plugin for WordPress is a sample application that shows how WordPress creators can easily add Text-to-Speech capabilities to written content with Amazon Polly. You can generate an audio feed for text-based content and insert it into an embedded player to increase the accessibility of your WordPress site. The sample code also enables you to publish podcasts directly from your site and make them available for listeners in the form of podcasts.”

Amazon Polly is not free for publishers

Although voice content feeds Amazon Echo and other sound devices, Amazon is not creating Amazon Polly for free. Polly uses AWS servers and has a cost pay-as-you-go of $4.00 per 1 million characters for speech requests (when outside the free tier). There is a free tier includes with 5 million characters per month, for the first 12 months, starting from the first request for speech. There is also the cost for hosting, as Poly only allows the hosting on Amazon S3 (Simple Storage Service).
