Apple today unveiled the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K, a $299 streaming box built around the A19 chip, three far-field microphones and a full-screen version of Siri AI. Pre-orders opened today in the US and 29 other countries and regions, and the device reaches stores on Friday, November 13. The price is more than double the $129 at which Apple launched the previous model in 2022.

In Short

Apple has a new Apple TV box that people can talk to from across the room, and its new Siri AI can answer questions about shows and find things to watch in a conversation. It matters to anyone who sells shows, apps or ads on TV screens, because a talking assistant now sits between viewers and what they pick to watch. The box costs $299, ships November 13, and the Siri AI part works in eight English-speaking countries at first, not in the EU.

What Apple published

The announcement went up on Apple Newsroom on October 13, 2026, as a press release headlined "Apple unveils the new Apple TV 4K, supercharged by Siri AI." It was one of four home-related releases Apple posted the same day. The others covered a new lineup of smart home accessories called Apple Home Collection, the next generation of HomePod mini, and a product called Apple HomeView. This article deals only with the Apple TV 4K release.

The headline claim, according to Apple, is that the new box delivers "its most immersive home theater experience yet." Bob Borchers, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, put the pieces together in the release's only quote: "The new Apple TV 4K is our most immersive home theater experience yet. With Siri AI, finding something to watch becomes a full-screen, conversational experience, and with built-in far-field microphones, it's completely hands-free. Pair it with HomePod for the best surround sound setup we've ever offered, and it makes managing your Apple Home accessories easier than ever. Now, alongside HomeView, HomePod mini 2, and Apple Home Collection, it's part of the most connected Apple Home we've ever built."

That last sentence is the clearest signal of intent. Apple is positioning the television box not as a standalone streaming accessory but as one node in a home system it sells in several pieces.

The price

According to Apple, Apple TV 4K (4th generation) costs $299 in the US, or $49.83 a month for six months through Apple Card Monthly Installments, a 0 percent APR option available only to US customers who select it at checkout and subject to credit approval. Six payments of $49.83 come to $298.98, a rounding difference of two cents.

The release lists one price and does not describe storage tiers or networking variants. The previous Apple TV 4K, the third generation, went on sale in November 2022 at $129 for a Wi-Fi model and $149 for a model with Ethernet and more storage. Against the lower of those, the new price is 2.3 times higher. Against the higher one, it is roughly double.

What the extra money buys, according to Apple, is a faster chip, the microphone array, a new remote, four-speaker surround sound with HomePod, and an upgraded home hub role. The Siri AI software itself is not exclusive to the new hardware, which is a detail the release places in its availability notes rather than in its opening paragraphs.

Siri AI on the television

Siri AI is the reworked assistant Apple first detailed at WWDC26 in June. PPC Land reported at the time that Apple's next-generation foundation models were custom-built in collaboration with Google and its Gemini models, running on device and on Apple's own servers. The assistant then shipped as an English-language beta on September 14, 2026, when PPC Land noted that Apple shipped Siri AI to Macs in the EU but not to iPhones there, alongside tvOS 27 and the other version 27 operating systems.

On Apple TV, the assistant takes over the whole screen. According to Apple, Siri AI is "a profoundly more capable and conversational assistant with personal context understanding, broad world knowledge, and the ability to take even more systemwide app actions." The release gives examples of the kinds of requests it handles. A viewer can ask "What Apple TV shows won at the Emmy Awards this year?" and see poster art pulled from the Apple TV app, along with suggestions such as "More award-winning comedies" to continue browsing.

During playback, the assistant answers follow-up questions in what Apple calls "a compact, subtle overlay." The release cites "Where was Pluribus filmed?" and "Is this appropriate for a 15-year-old?" as examples. Pluribus is an Apple TV original series, so both the search example and the playback example in the release point toward Apple's own catalogue.

Personal context, routed through the iPhone

The most technically interesting example is a single sentence. According to Apple, "With an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone, Siri AI on Apple TV 4K can now tap into a user's personal context to answer requests like 'Play the show Alinda recommended.'" Answering that request means the assistant has to find a recommendation inside personal data, such as a message, and match it to a title the household can play.

The footnotes describe how this works in practice. Siri AI on Apple TV requires the owner of the home in the Home app to have an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad running the latest software, with Siri AI turned on and set to a supported language. Personal context requests need a paired Apple Intelligence-enabled device with Siri AI enabled. The television, in other words, does not hold the personal data itself. It borrows context from the phone.

That dependency has a geographic consequence. Apple states in the same footnote that "Siri AI will not be initially available in the EU in iOS or iPadOS." Since the television feature requires an iPhone or iPad with Siri AI turned on, a household in the EU cannot meet the setup condition through those devices. The list of launch countries confirms the gap: Siri AI on Apple TV 4K is available at launch in the US, Australia, Canada, India, New Zealand, Singapore, South Africa and the UK, in English only. No EU member state is on it.

Apple has blamed the Digital Markets Act for withholding Siri AI from iPhones in Europe since June, and PPC Land reported in September that the company's $1,999 iPhone Duo arrives without Siri AI in the EU. The Apple TV release does not mention the regulation. It simply inherits the restriction.

Beta status, usage caps and a future fee

Three qualifications in the footnotes shape what buyers actually get. First, Siri AI on Apple TV is a beta, delivered in tvOS 27.2. Second, according to Apple, "Certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits." Third, "Expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future." Apple has given no price for that expanded access. PPC Land first reported the daily caps and the promise of a future fee when Siri AI shipped on September 14, and the Apple TV release repeats them without new detail.

Siri AI also runs on older hardware. According to Apple, it "is available as a beta on Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later)." The second-generation model dates from 2021. Owners of the second and third generations get the conversational search, though not the far-field microphones that make it hands-free.

Three microphones and hands-free control

The hardware change that Siri AI cannot replicate on older boxes is the microphone array. According to Apple, the new Apple TV 4K has three far-field microphones, letting users "control what they're watching and discover new shows completely hands-free." Apple says advanced echo cancellation "intelligently isolates a user's voice from background sound" to recognize "Hey Siri" or "Siri" while audio is playing.

Previous Apple TV models relied on a microphone in the Siri Remote, activated by pressing a button. Putting the microphones in the box means the assistant listens for a wake phrase across the room, the same design Amazon and Google have used on smart speakers and on some televisions. PPC Land reported in January 2025 that Google planned Gemini-powered voice controls for Google TV, with some TVs carrying far-field microphones and proximity sensors.

Language support for the far-field microphones is narrower than the marketing suggests and differs from the Siri AI list. According to Apple, far-field support is available when the primary tvOS language is set to Mandarin Chinese, Dutch, English, Finnish, French, German, Hebrew, Norwegian or Swedish. That means a household in France or Germany can use the microphones for Siri, but not for Siri AI.

The A19 chip and an AV1 decoder

According to Apple, the A19 chip delivers "up to 50 percent faster CPU performance and up to 2x faster GPU performance than the previous generation." The previous generation used the A15 Bionic, so the jump spans four chip generations. Apple's figures are vendor-supplied, carry the qualifier "up to," and the release does not describe the test conditions behind them.

The more consequential change for streaming services may be a line about video decoding. According to Apple, "The A19 chip also includes a new, dedicated AV1 decoder, enabling more efficient, high-quality streaming while using less bandwidth." AV1 is a royalty-free video codec developed by the Alliance for Open Media. Hardware decoding matters because software decoding of AV1 is computationally expensive, and services tend to deliver AV1 streams only to devices that can decode them efficiently. A hardware decoder in Apple's box gives streaming services one more large device class to which they can send AV1 instead of older codecs.

The Siri Remote gets Find My

The Siri Remote keeps its design, according to Apple, and adds Find My support with Precision Finding plus the option to play a sound on the remote. The conditions are specific. Find My works on the Siri Remote (2nd generation or later). Precision Finding works only on the Siri Remote (4th generation) when paired with an iPhone Duo, iPhone Air or iPhone 17 or later, excluding the iPhone 17e, running the latest iOS. Playing a sound is exclusive to the newest remote.

The new remote is compatible with Apple TV HD and all Apple TV 4K models, and Apple sells it separately. The release does not give its standalone price.

Four-speaker surround sound

For the first time, according to Apple, users can create a four-speaker surround sound setup with Apple TV 4K (4th generation) and HomePod mini 2. The four speakers "work together with Apple TV 4K to intelligently recognize their position in the room so audio timing and levels are automatically calibrated to the space." HomePod (2nd generation) can be used in the same setup "as long as the front and rear speaker pairs match."

The footnote spells out the requirement: four HomePod (2nd generation) or HomePod mini 2 speakers in matching front and rear pairs, paired with the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K running the latest software. The feature does not extend to older Apple TV models. Details of the HomePod mini 2 itself appear in a separate Apple release.

The home hub role

Apple TV has served as a hub for Apple's smart home system for years, and the new model continues that. According to Apple, a compatible doorbell can show notifications directly on the TV, so users "can see who's at the door, speak with them, and control other accessories like unlocking the door." The box supports automations, guest mode and local processing of HomeKit Secure Video.

The new element is Apple Intelligence-generated descriptions of camera activity and summarized notifications. These come with conditions. According to Apple, video descriptions for HomeKit Secure Video recordings require setup with an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone or iPad and a subscription to an eligible iCloud+ plan. Some features, such as video summaries, "are available for a limited number of cameras depending on the iCloud+ plan," and Apple says supported camera counts "may change over time." Smart home control through Siri AI is also available hands-free, and the device includes built-in Wi-Fi and Thread for connecting accessories.

Google made a similar move with its $99.99 TV Streamer in 2024, which PPC Land reported included a built-in Thread border router and a Google Home panel on the TV. Apple's box now costs three times as much.

Content, sports and screen savers

The release lists the familiar services: Apple Fitness+, Apple Arcade, the App Store's games and the Apple TV app, with "hundreds of Apple Originals" and live sports including Formula 1 in the US, Major League Soccer and Friday Night Baseball. Apple's footnote adds that a subscription may be required for some content and that live sports are subject to blackouts.

Two smaller software changes appear. Users can now customize how their iCloud photos appear on Apple TV from an iPhone or iPad, setting up Memories & Slideshows or Portraits screen savers "without making their entire library visible." A new shuffle feature rotates between screen saver categories. These require Apple TV 4K (2nd generation or later) with the latest software.

Secure Exclaves and microphone data

Putting always-listening microphones in a living-room device raises an obvious question about what happens to the audio. Apple's answer is architectural. According to Apple, Apple TV 4K and the A19 chip include Secure Exclaves, "protected and compartmentalized runtimes used to process microphone data separately from the rest of the system." Apple states that data processed and analyzed in the Secure Exclaves "cannot be accessed by tvOS, apps, the user, or Apple."

Siri requests on the device, according to Apple, can use on-device processing or Private Cloud Compute, the server system Apple says extends device-level privacy to the cloud. "When processed in Private Cloud Compute, data is neither stored nor made accessible to Apple or anyone else," according to the release. HomeKit Secure Video footage is stored end-to-end encrypted and is never accessible to Apple.

These are Apple's own descriptions of its design. The release does not reference independent audits of the Secure Exclaves implementation on Apple TV.

Environment

According to Apple, the device uses 100 percent recycled gold plating and tin solder in all Apple-designed printed circuit boards, and 100 percent recycled rare earth elements in all magnets. The thermal module uses 80 percent recycled aluminum, and the Siri Remote enclosure contains 100 percent recycled aluminum. Paper packaging is 100 percent fiber-based by weight of US retail packaging, a calculation that excludes adhesives, inks and coatings. Apple ties these figures to its goal of carbon neutrality across its footprint by 2030.

Why this matters for marketers

The television is where the large streaming platforms are building conversational search, and each version puts a model between the viewer and the content. Amazon made Alexa+ free on US Fire TV devices in August and said viewers pick the assistant's top recommendation over 40% more often, a relative figure without a baseline. In September Amazon added live content from more than 40 apps to the Fire TV home screen and a dedicated Alexa+ hub. Apple's release now moves Apple TV in the same direction, with one structural difference: the examples Apple chose return poster art from the Apple TV app and answer questions about Apple originals.

For CTV advertisers and streaming services, the question is who gets surfaced when a viewer asks for "something like this" instead of scrolling a grid. On a grid, apps compete for placement through rows, tiles and, on many platforms, paid home screen advertising. PPC Land has reported that 97% of smart TV users start on the home screen, a figure cited in its coverage of Philips replacing Google TV with Titan OS. A full-screen assistant can bypass the grid entirely and answer with a single title.

Amazon has already built an ad product on top of that behavior. PPC Land reported in June that Amazon opened Alexa+ ad inventory to self-service buyers, adding Alexa automatically as an inventory source for Sponsored Tile campaigns that target Fire TV or Prime Video. Apple's release contains no reference to advertising, sponsored results or how Siri AI ranks third-party apps against the Apple TV app. Apple has, however, widened the legal scope of its ad business: PPC Land reported in July that Apple rewrote its advertising terms so that delivery may cover "other platforms or properties," without naming any new surface.

There is also a measurement angle. The Secure Exclaves design keeps microphone data away from tvOS and apps, which rules out the kind of ambient audio signal that some TV platforms have explored for audience data. The visible queries a viewer makes to Siri AI, on the other hand, run through Apple's models, some on Apple's servers, and the inference behind each answer is subject to daily caps that Apple says it will eventually charge to lift. Apple has not said whether those caps apply differently to entertainment searches on the television.

Finally, the price. At $299, Apple TV 4K sits well above Amazon's Fire TV sticks and Google's TV Streamer. The new box is not the only way into Siri AI, since owners of 2021 and 2022 models get the software beta. What the higher price buys is the hands-free microphones, the surround setup and the hub features, which tie the device more tightly to the rest of Apple's home lineup.

What the release does not say

Apple did not disclose storage capacity, networking options, the standalone price of the Siri Remote, the list of 29 non-US countries and regions where pre-orders opened, or when Siri AI on Apple TV will reach languages other than English or markets in the EU. It also gave no figure for the daily usage limits on server-side features or for the fee Apple plans to charge for expanded access.
