That acceptance step is the structural difference between a collaborative post and a tag. A tag attaches a name to someone else's content. A collaborative post distributes authorship, and it does not do so without consent.
What the format covers
Format coverage is broad rather than selective. The announcement states that collaboration works on almost any format, including standard posts covering text, video, image or posts that include a third-party link, alongside documents, polls, events and celebration posts.
LinkedIn's help documentation extends that list slightly. The Help Center pages covering creation list text posts, image and multi-image posts, video posts, third-party link posts, storyline posts, document posts, celebration posts, polls, and events. Storyline posts and multi-image posts do not appear in the press announcement, which suggests the published product surface is wider than the summary description.
One constraint applies across every format: collaborative posts must be public. A post restricted to connections cannot carry collaborators, which rules out the format for anything a brand or executive intends to keep inside a narrower audience.
A second constraint is less visible. The ability to collaborate with a member depends on that member's collaboration settings, a per-account control governing whether collaboration invites can be received at all. An invitation that never arrives cannot be accepted, and the documentation does not specify the default state of that setting.
The creation flow, step by step
For an individual member, the sequence begins at the share box on the LinkedIn homepage. According to LinkedIn's help documentation, the member clicks Start a post, types the content, clicks Add collaborators, searches for connections and selects their names, clicks Save, then clicks Post. Invited collaborators then receive a notification to accept or decline.
What happens next splits cleanly. If collaborators accept, the post appears on their profile with them listed as collaborators. If collaborators decline, the post stays on the originating profile only. There is no partial state and no silent inclusion.
Company Pages follow a separate path. According to the documentation, a Page super admin or content admin opens the Page admin view, clicks Create on the left pane, then selects Publish a collaborative post from the Create pop-up window. Collaborators are searched and selected from the Add collaborator pop-up, saved, and the post content is typed afterwards rather than before. The ordering is inverted relative to the member flow: Pages assign collaborators first, then write.
Page participation on the receiving end carries an additional requirement. Page admins must accept invitations on behalf of a Page, meaning a brand cannot be added as a collaborator by a creator acting alone.
Control sits with the creator, and only the creator
The permission model concentrates authority in one account. According to the help documentation, only the person who created the post can edit it or manage collaborators. That covers adding new names after publication and removing existing ones.
Post-publication editing runs through the More icon on the upper-right corner of the post, then Edit post, then a control labelled Edit with others showing the current collaborator count. From the Add collaborator window, the creator can search for connections or a Page to add, or click Remove next to an existing collaborator, then save. Collaborators who are pending and collaborators who have already accepted can both be removed, and removing a collaborator removes them from the post entirely.
Collaborators retain one counter-power. They can remove themselves at any time after accepting, through the More icon and a Remove myself from collaborative post option. According to the documentation, removal means the person is no longer shown on the post, the post is no longer associated with their profile or Page, and access to engagement metrics is lost. Anyone who has not yet accepted can simply decline the invitation instead.
Responsibility, however, does not distribute the way credit does. The documentation states that the person who created the post is responsible for following LinkedIn's content policies. A collaborator lends a name and a network to content they cannot edit, while the originating account absorbs the policy exposure. For agencies placing client Pages alongside executive profiles, that asymmetry defines where the risk sits.
The metrics gap between profiles and Pages
The most consequential technical detail in the documentation concerns measurement, and it is not symmetrical.
Connections who accept a collaboration invitation can view engagement metrics such as reactions, comments and shares. Pages cannot. According to LinkedIn, Page admins can only see performance in Page analytics, and engagement metrics are not available for Pages added as collaborators.
That distinction matters for the exact use case LinkedIn describes in its own material: a brand co-authoring alongside an employee or an executive. The brand appears on the post and reaches its follower base through it, but the granular engagement view stays with the individual accounts. Attribution for a co-authored campaign therefore depends on which entity created the post in the first place, not merely on who appears at the top of it.
The gap also sits awkwardly against the measurement infrastructure LinkedIn has been assembling. The Member Post Analytics API, launched in July 2025, gave third-party tools including Hootsuite, Buffer, Sprinklr and Later access to creator performance data. Response in those comments was not uniformly positive. Several practitioners questioned whether an authorship feature addresses the platform's distribution problems. One commenter, Milton N., argued that collaboration is becoming "a credibility signal," while another, Adam Najberg, described the update as "nibbling around the edges" relative to underlying algorithm behaviour.
