Prime Video will premiere Fallout Shelter: The Experiment, an unscripted competition series built on the Fallout video game universe, on Wednesday, January 13, 2027, with a $1,000,000 prize for the last contestant standing. Amazon announced the date on October 23, 2026, timed to the franchise's annual Fallout Day, and said the ten-episode season will stream exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories.
In Short
Amazon is making a reality show where ordinary people live inside fake nuclear bunkers modelled on the Fallout games, and the winner gets one million dollars. It starts on Prime Video on January 13, 2027, and the last episodes arrive two weeks later. For advertisers, it is another Fallout-branded title on a service where ads are the default for most subscribers, though Amazon has said nothing yet about how the show will be sold.
The schedule
The release, dated from Culver City, California, sets out a compressed rollout. "The season consists of ten episodes, with the first four premiering on January 13, 2027, followed by three episodes weekly through January 27, 2027," according to Amazon. Four, then three, then three: the arithmetic resolves to three release dates, January 13, January 20 and January 27, all Wednesdays.
That structure differs from both of the patterns Prime Video has used in its scripted slate this autumn. The Terminal List season two arrived as a single block; Prime Video put all eight episodes in more than 240 markets on October 21. Fallout Shelter splits the difference. A four-episode opening gives viewers enough to commit to, while the two weekly drops of three keep the title in the conversation for a fortnight rather than a weekend. The whole season will have aired inside 15 days.
The territorial claim, "more than 240 countries and territories worldwide," is the same phrase Amazon used for The Terminal List. It describes where the service operates, not where the show was cast or filmed. The release does not say where production took place, how many contestants enter the vaults, who hosts, or whether filming has finished.
What the show is
Amazon describes the series in two sentences. It "invites everyday participants to test their aptitude for the apocalypse in Vault-Tec's state-of-the-art bomb-proof vault shelters," according to the release. Contestants "will go head to head in a series of high-octane drills, psychological dilemmas and morally challenging behavior trials until one special dweller emerges to win the prize of a lifetime--$1,000,000."
Vault-Tec is the fictional corporation in the Fallout games that builds underground shelters ahead of a nuclear war, and "dweller" is the games' term for a vault resident. The title itself comes from Fallout Shelter, a free mobile game in which players manage a vault. Bethesda Game Studios describes that game as "the award-winning mobile game with more than 230 million downloads," according to the company's boilerplate in the release. The download figure is cumulative and undated; the release gives no period or source for it.
The series is not new to Prime Video's slate. Amazon ordered it in January 2026, and it was presented again at the company's May advertising event, where PPC Land's full account of Prime Video's 2026 Upfront listed it with Studio Lambert, Kilter Films and Bethesda as partners. The October 23 release adds the date, the episode count, the prize and the release pattern.
Who makes it
Three companies share the credit. Fallout Shelter: The Experiment is "produced by Studio Lambert in co-production with Kilter Films and in association with Bethesda Game Studios," according to Amazon. Twelve executive producers are named: Amina Badresingh, Toni Ireland, Stephen Lovelock, Stephen Yemoh, Jack Burgess, Tim Harcourt and Stephen Lambert of Studio Lambert; Jonathan Nolan, Lisa Joy and Athena Wickham of Kilter Films; and James Altman and Todd Howard of Bethesda Game Studios.
Studio Lambert
Studio Lambert carries the unscripted expertise. The London-based company, founded in 2008 by its chief executive Stephen Lambert and run with chief creative officer Tim Harcourt, operates in the UK and the US. The release credits it with "the new Grand Tour for Prime Video; the fifteen-times Emmy award-winning The Traitors for NBC Peacock; Netflix's BAFTA-winning Squid Game: The Challenge; seven seasons of The Circle for Netflix, and a forthcoming series of The Circle for Hulu; and the Emmy award-winning Undercover Boss for CBS."
The closest precedent on that list is Squid Game: The Challenge, which turned a scripted streaming hit into a real contest with a cash prize. Fallout Shelter applies a similar template, with one difference: the source is a game franchise whose audience existed long before the television drama.
Kilter Films and Bethesda
Kilter Films, run by Lisa Joy and Jonathan Nolan with producing partner Athena Wickham, developed the scripted Fallout series with Bethesda. Bethesda Game Studios, founded in 2001, created Fallout 3, Fallout 4, Fallout 76 and the mobile Fallout Shelter, alongside The Elder Scrolls series and Starfield.
The Kilter boilerplate also lists two further Amazon projects: the Fourth Wing adaptation with Michael B. Jordan's Outlier Society, and a live-action Wolfenstein series being developed with the game's studio, MachineGames. Taken together with Fallout, that makes two game-to-series adaptations from the same production company in Amazon's pipeline.
The franchise numbers
Most of the figures in the release concern the scripted drama rather than the competition show. Fallout, starring Ella Purnell, Aaron Moten, Walton Goggins and Kyle MacLachlan, "garnered 17 Emmy nominations in its first season," according to the release. The second season returned on December 17, 2025. "In March 2026, the series surpassed 100 million viewers worldwide across its first two seasons, making it one of Prime Video's most watched series, ever," according to Kilter Films' boilerplate. Season three "is currently in production."
The 100 million figure needs a caveat. The release does not say how a viewer is counted, whether the number refers to accounts or people, or what minimum viewing time qualifies. Amazon used a similar unexplained figure for The Terminal List, describing that franchise as having "100M+ viewers worldwide." Neither claim can be compared with independent measurement on the basis of what Amazon has published.
The first season premiered in April 2024, three months after Amazon switched advertising on by default for Prime Video subscribers. Season one, season two and now the competition spin-off have therefore all been released into a service where ads are the standard experience.
Why the release matters to advertisers
The release says nothing about advertising. It does not mention sponsorship, brand integration, product placement or whether the series will carry ads, and no advertising partner is named. That silence is not unusual for a content announcement, but the context around it is commercial.
Prime Video's AVOD tier is the default. Since January 2024, US subscribers see ads unless they pay extra, and in March 2026 Amazon raised the ad-free add-on from $2.99 to $4.99 a month and rebranded it Prime Video Ultra, a 67% increase that took effect on April 10. Amazon reported in February that Prime Video reached an average ad-supported audience of 315 million viewers globally in the fourth quarter of 2025, alongside $21.3 billion in quarterly advertising revenue.
Amazon's ad sales leadership has been explicit that content and inventory are sold together. Alan Moss, Amazon's vice president of global advertising sales, described Prime Video and live sports as one business in May. Live sports fill much of the schedule around the originals: Prime Video's October 2026 programming listed 26 live events in the US, with the NBA starting on the service on October 23. A 15-day, three-drop schedule places a franchise title in that inventory mix for the second half of January 2027.
Whether Amazon intends to sell sponsorship or integration into Fallout Shelter is not known; the release gives no indication either way. Nor does it give any age rating or content advisory, which advertisers in sensitive categories would normally look for before buying adjacency.
The service the show sits on
The release's "About Prime Video" paragraph frames the service as a bundle. Prime Video offers "premium movies, series, live sports and free ad-supported (FAST) Channels in one app," according to Amazon. All customers, "with or without Prime," can access "100+ add-on streaming subscriptions (AMC+, Apple TV, FOX One, HBO Max, MGM+, Paramount+, Peacock Premium Plus, STARZ, Wonder Project, and more), 900+ FAST Channels, and the largest selection of titles available to rent or buy."
The FAST channels referenced there are linear, ad-supported streams, a different product from on-demand viewing of originals such as Fallout Shelter. The list of add-on subscriptions is the more notable detail for the streaming market: Peacock Premium Plus appears on it, which means a viewer can subscribe to the platform that carries Studio Lambert's The Traitors through Prime Video, the platform that will carry its Fallout format.
The paragraph also repeats a line about the business itself: "In April 2026, Amazon shared Prime Video is a large and profitable business in its own right." No revenue, profit or subscriber figure accompanies it. Amazon does not break out Prime Video's financials in its quarterly reports, so the claim cannot be checked against reported numbers.
The paragraph also names two playback features, X-Ray and Shop the Show, which Amazon says "enhance the viewing experience." Shop the Show is a commerce feature linking what appears on screen to products. Neither is tied to Fallout Shelter in the release.
Fallout as an Amazon asset
The broader pattern is that Amazon is now running Fallout as a multi-format property rather than a single drama. The scripted series has two seasons out and a third in production, with Aaron Paul cast in an undisclosed role for season three. The competition show adds a second format. The Bethesda games continue in parallel, including Fallout 76, which the release describes as an "online open-world multiplayer game."
A game franchise brings something that an original drama does not: a fan base that already exists outside streaming and can be reached before a premiere. The October 23 timing, attached to Fallout Day, is itself an example. The announcement was released with a date trailer posted to Prime Video's YouTube channel the same day.
Fallout is not Amazon's only franchise bet this season: Prime Video dated The Rings of Power season three at the same Upfront. And from 2027, the Emmy Awards will move to Prime Video under a six-year deal that removes the ceremony from the ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC rotation, a ceremony at which Fallout's first season collected 17 nominations.
What remains unknown
Several questions are left open by the release. It does not name a host, give the number of contestants, set the age range or eligibility rules for participants, or say where the vault sets were built. It does not state whether the $1,000,000 prize is paid in a single sum or whether any part is contingent. There is no content rating. And beyond the "exclusively on Prime Video" line, there is no statement on how the series will be packaged for advertisers.
