Snap Inc. on September 16, 2026 opened pre-orders for SPECS, its standalone augmented reality glasses, at $2,195 with a $200 refundable deposit, and paired the hardware with an anticipatory AI service, a cellular charging case sold through Verizon and a set of workplace agreements with Salesforce, Amazon Web Services and NVIDIA.

In Short

Snap, the company behind Snapchat, has put a price on glasses that show digital screens, maps and games on top of the real world, and has attached an AI helper that tries to guess what you need before you ask. It matters because this is one of the first attempts by a large technology company to sell see-through computer glasses to ordinary shoppers, and the AI helper promises not to use your connected emails and calendars to show you ads. The glasses start shipping later this fall in the US, UK and France, and anyone 18 or older in the US can already try a limited phone version of the AI helper.

What is on sale, and where

The commercial terms are set out plainly in the release Snap distributed through Business Wire from Los Angeles. SPECS can be pre-ordered at SPECS.com. Shipping is expected to begin "later this fall" in three countries: the United States, the United Kingdom and France, according to Snap. No firm ship date was given.

The figure itself was not a surprise to anyone following the company's earnings. On the second-quarter call on August 3, Evan Spiegel, Snap's co-founder and chief executive, disclosed the $2,195 price point, undercutting earlier reporting that had pointed to roughly $2,500. That earlier estimate came from journalist Alex Heath, whose April reporting PPC Land covered in May when the product was reported to be heading for a fall 2026 consumer release.

A physical retail presence follows. Beginning October 1, SPECS First Look at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles will offer hands-on demonstrations and meetings with members of the SPECS team, with new experiences promised through the holiday season, according to Snap. Snap's homepage FAQ lists questions about frame sizing, in-person trials, cancellation of pre-orders and the return policy, though the answers themselves were not part of the material reviewed for this article.

Corporate structure matters to the reading of this launch. The glasses and the new AI service belong to Specs Inc., which Snap describes as a wholly-owned subsidiary "dedicated to making computing more human." PPC Land reported that Snap spun its hardware ambitions into that subsidiary in January 2026, with a structure designed to allow outside investment, a multi-year Qualcomm processor partnership and close to 100 open roles at formation.

Spiegel framed the product in the release in consumer terms.

"SPECS are built from the ground up to make computing more human," said Evan Spiegel, co-founder and CEO, Snap Inc. "They're incredibly easy to use and bring new experiences into the world that you can share together with friends and family. I'm so excited about the new ways SPECS can help you get things done, with your head up and your hands free."

Inside the frame

SPECS put the computing hardware directly into the glasses, "without a puck or tether," according to Snap. Input relies on hands and voice, handled by what the company calls an AI-native operating system, SPECS OS, which it describes as proprietary and context-aware.

The optical system is the headline specification. A see-through waveguide containing "billions of nanostructures" delivers a 51-degree field of view, which Snap equates to a 115-inch cinema screen placed about ten feet away. The homepage separately claims a display capable of 16 million colors for streaming.

Audio is handled by custom stereo speakers and six high signal-to-noise-ratio MEMS microphones built into the temples, according to Snap. The company describes the audio as open-ear and says the microphone array cuts through background noise on calls.

Weight has long been the limiting factor for the category. SPECS frames are made from Swiss TR90 polymer, and Snap lists two sizes: 132 grams at 47mm and 136 grams at 52mm. For comparison, Meta's Ray-Ban Display, which went on sale at $799 after Meta's Connect conference on September 17, 2025, is a display-equipped pair of smart glasses rather than a full augmented reality computer, and the two products sit at very different price points.

Snap's privacy page adds one architectural detail absent from the press release. SPECS use separate processors: one handles understanding of the surrounding world, while another runs experiences. Experiences use that spatial understanding without automatically receiving raw camera and sensor data, and must ask the wearer before gaining direct access, according to Snap.

Battery life per charge was not stated in any of the documents. Bluetooth pairing with a phone enables calls, notifications and music. The glasses can also connect wirelessly to a computer to extend a workstation, and they support Bluetooth peripherals such as keyboards.

SPECS Intelligence: an assistant that does not wait

The more consequential software item may be SPECS Intelligence, which Snap calls an anticipatory AI service. It runs across three surfaces: iPhone, Mac and the glasses. Crucially, the glasses are not required.

The service builds an understanding of a user's "goals, priorities, relationships, and routines" from the apps and tools that person chooses to connect, according to Snap's newsroom post dated September 15. Rather than waiting for a prompt, it is designed to surface information and actions when it judges they will be useful. Snap's examples are specific: before a meeting, the service could highlight decisions to make and questions to ask; for a trip, it could assemble flight, hotel and dinner plans while flagging a work deadline that falls during the visit.

Two organizing features sit inside the broader product. Corners separate areas of life such as work and family. Goals let users set and track longer-term objectives. The product page adds that the service keeps "work and personal life in their own separate corners."

On the glasses, the context moves into the field of view. A traveler can say "Hey SPECS" to pull up flight details, hotel information, reservations and reminders, or request a daily briefing that includes a schedule overview and meeting preparation, according to Snap.

Approval is built in as a rule, at least on paper. The product page states that "SPECS won't send a message, make a change, or take an action until you say yes." That language puts the service in the same category of personal agents now appearing across consumer platforms. Meta, for example, described a personal agent called Muse on September 8, 2026, which PPC Land covered as an AI agent that buys things inside WhatsApp for US users.

What the iOS preview does and does not do

Access is split in two, and the difference is material. Anyone 18 or older in the United States can download the SPECS app for iOS and try a preview with no invitation. By connecting a Google account, preview users receive insights about where their time and attention go, drawn from Gmail and Google Calendar, according to Snap.

The newsroom post is explicit about the limits: the mobile preview "does not include the broader service's anticipatory suggestions or actions." In other words, the feature that gives the product its name is not in the version the public can use now.

The fuller experience is reserved for Mac. Early access will be offered exclusively through the SPECS Mac app, by invitation only, with selected waitlist members receiving an email to sign in and connect their everyday apps. The waitlist sits at specs.com/intelligence and inside the SPECS app. No timeline for broader availability, pricing or a subscription tier was given. The product page's own FAQ includes the questions "Is SPECS Intelligence available to everyone?" and "How is this different from ChatGPT, Claude, or other Chatbots?", but the answers were not part of the reviewed material.

Privacy claims, and what they exclude

Privacy occupies a dedicated page and a substantial share of the release. The core claims are specific enough to test.

SPECS do not use facial recognition to identify people, according to Snap. The glasses do not continuously record or save audio, video or photos. Cameras and sensors process the surroundings in real time to locate surfaces, objects and hands, and for basic spatial understanding that processing "does not create or save a photo or video," the privacy page states. When a wearer captures a photo, video or audio, a prominent external LED in the center of the frame lights up or flashes, and the wearer hears a shutter sound.

The privacy page organizes this under four principles: user control over permissions and connected services; permission before Lenses access sensitive data such as raw microphone, camera or precise location; visible recording; and data protection by design, including encryption in transit and at rest when cloud processing is needed. Every Lens is moderated before publication, and developers do not receive unrestricted access to the device, according to Snap. The design brief is summarized in a single line: "SPECS look different because they are different."

Those claims arrive six days after a regulator published a detailed critique of a rival product's recording indicator. The Hamburg data protection commissioner's 53-page report, dated September 10, found that the LED on Ray-Ban Meta glasses is often too dim for bystanders to notice, and does not illuminate at all on the second-generation model when a wearer is simply talking to the assistant. Snap describes its own LED as "prominent" and central. No independent test of that claim was cited in the Snap material. Nor did the documents address how SPECS handle the household exemption under the GDPR, a question the Hamburg report treated as central for any camera worn in public. With shipping planned for France and the UK, that question will not stay abstract for long.

SPECS Intelligence carries separate commitments. Snap personnel cannot view or access the personal content used with the service, according to Snap. Personal content from connected accounts will not be used to train or fine-tune Snap's AI models, "or to serve personalized ads." Processing combines on-device computation with secure cloud infrastructure.

That last commitment is narrow and worth reading carefully. It covers personal content from connected accounts. It does not, on the face of the documents, address advertising on SPECS more broadly, or how signals generated on the glasses themselves are treated. The company's privacy page also describes the service as a "personal intelligence service," a slightly different label from the "anticipatory AI service" used in the release.

Lenses, partners and the commerce surface

Snap's application model rests on Lenses, the sandboxed experiences built in Lens Studio. PPC Land reported in June 2025 that the desktop version of the tool had attracted over 400,000 professional developers and teams. The release now refers to "hundreds of developers around the world" creating AR experiences for SPECS, a much smaller figure that likely reflects the hardware-specific subset.

Entertainment partnerships lead the consumer list. The SPECS browser supports streaming from YouTube, HBO Max and others on the 115-inch virtual display. Spotify supplies audio. With HBO Max, Snap is building a Harry Potter experience tied to the HBO Original Series Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone, which premieres at Christmas, according to Snap.

Sport and fitness follow. Snap is working with the NBA and WNBA on interactive basketball experiences that overlay drills, visual guidance and progress cues onto a real court. Soccer and golf training Lenses are also listed, and ALO Wellness Club is due to bring movement, recovery and mindfulness programs next year.

Education includes Apollo 11, an interactive recreation of the moon mission, and Starmap, which overlays constellations onto the sky. Connected Lenses let two SPECS wearers share an experience in the same physical space; the first titles are Dominoes with Jimmy Butler, Chess and Table Tennis. Snapchat itself has been redesigned for the glasses, so a Snap can be taken by snapping fingers, and a hands-free video call shows friends the wearer's view.

Utility features are where daily use is most likely to be decided. Translation renders real-time subtitles from 60 languages. Walking navigation overlays directions onto the street, with optional voice guidance. Tripadvisor for SPECS surfaces nearby restaurants and landmarks, translates reviews and local phrases, and converts currency. Whiteboard supports brainstorming and diagramming.

For marketers, the shopping line deserves the closest look. Powered by the Shopify Catalog, SPECS let users browse products in 3D and place them at full scale in a room to judge fit, according to Snap. That is a product discovery surface, not an ad format. No advertising product for SPECS was described in any of the six documents.

Enterprise: Agentforce, Amazon Quick and NVIDIA

Snap published a separate newsroom post, also dated September 15, on workplace use. Its argument is historical: computers reshaped desk work from the 1980s onward, yet "most work does not happen at a desk," the post states. It happens on store floors, in factories and in the field.

Five partners are named, each with a defined role.

Salesforce is bringing Agentforce to SPECS. Employees would use the glasses to identify what they are looking at, open a case, surface relevant information and update a workflow without switching to a separate screen, according to Snap. Salesforce unveiled Agentforce at Dreamforce on September 19, 2024, and in April 2026 moved to open its platform to external AI agents through Headless 360.

AWS is working with Snap to connect SPECS to Amazon Quick, which the post describes as "the AI assistant for work." In a retail example, an associate could ask Quick through the glasses where a product is located and how many are in stock, with answers displayed in view.

NVIDIA will bring agents built on its XR AI stack to SPECS, so the glasses can interpret a worker's surroundings, access company data and offer guidance in real time.

Two NVIDIA partners are already exploring applications. Trifork's Tandem connects onsite technicians with remote experts and AI agents; experts see what the technician sees, identify components and draw annotations directly into the technician's view. Hololight turns SPECS into a spatial workstation, streaming tools, documents and 3D models to the glasses.

Deployment is the unglamorous part. Snap says it is working with device management vendors on mobile device management and security controls so enterprises can run SPECS at scale. No vendor was named. No enterprise pricing, volume commitments or pilot customers were disclosed either, and the post itself calls these "early partnerships."

The pattern will be familiar to readers tracking agentic AI in advertising, where the same companies are building systems that act on a goal rather than a single instruction. Snap's own ads business moved in that direction on June 18, 2026, when it opened its advertising platform to third-party agents through an MCP server.

Cellular: Verizon, Orange and EE

Wi-Fi dependence has been a practical weakness for standalone glasses. Snap's answer is a charging case with a cellular modem. Sold separately, the case provides four additional charges and connects through participating carriers, according to Snap.

In the United States, Verizon is the partner. It will offer custom data plans, flexible financing, digital setup and demonstrations at select stores. The SPECS Connected Case bundle will cost $2,395, and Verizon will offer eligible customers financing that includes a 36-month payment plan. Connected Wearable data plans start at $10 a month for Verizon customers and $20 a month for non-Verizon customers.

What does the case cost on its own? The release does not say. The only implied figure is the $200 gap between the $2,395 bundle and the $2,195 glasses-only price, and Snap did not confirm that the difference equals a standalone case price.

Outside the US, Orange will carry data plans in France and EE in the UK, with pricing still to come, according to Snap.

Discrepancies in the source material

Several inconsistencies appear across the documents, and none is resolved in the material itself.

The dates differ. Snap's newsroom posts on SPECS Intelligence and on enterprise use are both dated September 15, 2026, while the Business Wire release on Snap's investor relations site is dated September 16, 2026, which is also the date PPC Land had recorded for the scheduled Los Angeles launch event. The gap may reflect time zones or staged publication. This article uses September 16 as the announcement date.

The accessory name differs. The release refers to a "SPECS Charging Case with Cellular" and, in the next paragraph, to a "SPECS Connected Case bundle." The documents do not state whether these are the same product in different packaging.

The enterprise links differ. The release directs readers to newsroom.snap.com/specs-for-enterprise, while the enterprise post itself points to SPECS.com/enterprise.

The service label differs. The release calls SPECS Intelligence an "anticipatory AI service"; the privacy page calls it a "personal intelligence service"; the product page describes it as "the personal assistant that understands you."

Why this matters for the marketing community

Three threads connect this release to the work of advertisers, agencies and publishers.

The first is the data line Snap has drawn. By stating that personal content from connected Gmail, calendar and other accounts will not be used for personalized ads, Snap has taken a position that differs from Meta's. PPC Land reported in October 2025 that Meta would begin using AI chat interactions for ad personalization from December 2025. Snap's commitment applies to one service and one class of data, and advertising on the glasses has not been defined at all. Still, it establishes a public benchmark that regulators, and competitors, can hold the company to.

The second is scale, or the lack of it. At $2,195, SPECS will not produce an addressable audience in the near term. Spiegel said in August that mass-market adoption would come towards the end of the decade, citing weight and cost. Snap's advertising revenue grew 9% in the second quarter, while other revenue, largely subscriptions, rose 85%. The hardware sits inside a company whose subscription business passed 25 million subscribers in July, and whose near-term money still comes from phones.

The third is the shape of the surfaces being built. A Shopify-powered 3D catalog, Tripadvisor recommendations delivered in the moment, an assistant that decides when to speak, and enterprise agents that answer stock questions in a shop aisle all describe discovery that happens without a search box or a feed. PPC Land raised the same question in 2024 when it asked whether Meta's smart glasses would change digital advertising. Two years on, the competitive calendar is tighter. Google has said a display-equipped Android XR model is planned for 2027, reports point to Meta shipping true AR glasses in late 2027, and Apple is not expected before 2028. Snap has placed a priced product on the market ahead of all three. Whether buyers follow at that price is the open question the next two quarters will begin to answer.
