Yelp this week launched its most substantial AI product update since the platform's founding in San Francisco in 2004, introducing a redesigned Yelp Assistant that moves beyond recommendation and into transaction completion - letting a single conversation go from identifying a business to booking an appointment, ordering food, or requesting a quote without ever leaving the app.

The announcement, made on April 21, 2026, at 7 AM Eastern Time, is the centrepiece of what Yelp calls its 2026 Spring Product Release: a package of more than 35 new features and updates. The release also brings new third-party scheduling integrations with Vagaro, Zocdoc, and Calendly; a visual upgrade to Menu Vision, the platform's augmented reality menu-scanning feature; and a new AI-powered support chatbot aimed at advertisers.

From search to action in one conversation

The original Yelp Assistant, first introduced in 2024, was a narrow tool designed to help consumers hire service professionals. It was subsequently expanded in October 2025 to answer questions about restaurants, retail shops, and attractions. The version launching today operates across every business category on Yelp and is accessible through a new, dedicated "Assistant" tab placed at the centre of the iOS and Android app interfaces.

The technical architecture draws on hundreds of millions of reviews, photos, and detailed business records contributed by Yelp's user community. According to Yelp, the system is built to handle requests that are "complex and highly specific" - surfacing first-hand, user-generated content to validate each recommendation rather than relying solely on structured business data. A user can describe something as particular as "birthday dinner spots with vegan options and heated outdoor seating" and receive tailored results with explanations of why each business fits the criteria, alongside star ratings, relevant review excerpts, and links to full business pages.

What separates this release from previous iterations is the addition of transaction capability. Once a business is selected, Yelp Assistant can initiate a restaurant reservation, start a quote request, or begin booking an appointment - completing each action inside the conversation thread. According to Craig Saldanha, chief product officer at Yelp: "For the first time, consumers can seamlessly move from discovery to action in a single conversation with new and enhanced integrations - from booking a table, to ordering delivery or scheduling an appointment."

The actions supported at launch are specific and vary by category. For restaurants, Yelp Assistant can reserve a table through Yelp Guest Manager - used by thousands of restaurants - or place a takeout or delivery order via DoorDash, Yelp's preferred partner covering more than half a million restaurants, as well as Grubhub. For services, it can request a quote across more than 450 categories, including home, auto, beauty, pet, and event services. Appointment booking works through integrations with Vagaro on iOS for beauty, wellness, and fitness businesses; Zocdoc on iOS for healthcare providers; and RepairPal for auto shops. Calendly for service professionals is scheduled to arrive later this summer.

The Calendly integration - where consumers book consultations directly from a quote request - represents a different model than the others. According to Chirag Chheda, CTO of Calendly: "Our integration with Yelp makes that a reality for service professionals by bringing Calendly's real-time availability directly into the conversation when a customer is ready to book."

Three new booking integrations explained

The Vagaro, Zocdoc, and Calendly partnerships are the first substantial expansion of Yelp's third-party booking ecosystem since the RepairPal acquisition in November 2024. Each integration is structured differently depending on the category it serves.

Vagaro is a salon, spa, and fitness marketplace. The integration, available now on iOS with Android and desktop availability promised later in 2026, allows consumers to book beauty and wellness appointments - haircuts, massages, nail services - directly from Yelp business pages, from the Yelp Assistant conversation, and from project messages. Real-time availability is shown, removing the need to contact the business separately. According to Fred Helou, CEO of Vagaro: "By connecting Yelp's powerful search and recommendation platform with Vagaro's robust scheduling capabilities, beauty, wellness and fitness businesses can capture high-intent customers at the exact moment they're ready to book."

Zocdoc brings a healthcare access use case. The integration allows consumers to go from finding a doctor on Yelp to booking an in-network appointment without switching apps. It is available now on iOS, with Android and desktop support coming later in 2026. Oliver Kharraz, MD, founder and CEO of Zocdoc, framed the purpose directly: "Booking a doctor's appointment should be just as easy as booking dinner. Integrating Zocdoc's healthcare access infrastructure into Yelp is another step toward making access to in-network care simple and immediate, wherever patients begin their search."

Calendly targets service professionals - plumbers, consultants, home improvement contractors - and works differently from Vagaro and Zocdoc. Rather than a consumer-facing marketplace, Calendly is a scheduling tool already used by service businesses to manage their availability. When a customer sends a quote request on Yelp, businesses can share their real-time Calendly availability and the appointment status - booked, pending, or cancelled - updates automatically in the conversation thread. According to Nicole Lund, Yelp's VP of Product: "With our new Calendly integration, for example, when a customer sends a quote request on Yelp, businesses can share their real-time availability with just a few taps."

All three integrations are also accessible throughout the broader Yelp app, not only inside Yelp Assistant - appearing directly on business pages and within project messages.

Menu Vision, first introduced in October 2025 as an augmented reality feature that let diners scan printed menus with their phone camera, received a substantial update in this release. The original version used text recognition to identify menu items and surface photos. The updated version overlays dish, drink, and dessert images directly on top of the physical menu as the camera hovers over it - not just in a side panel, but placed over the text itself.

Each item now displays the number of related reviews and photos, and a "Popular" badge highlights standout items. Tapping any overlaid dish opens all available photos and relevant reviews. Yelp states it has also improved matching accuracy - the system now recognises more dish names and synonyms - and expanded overall menu coverage using both photos and reviews. The feature additionally processes QR code menus on iOS: pointing the camera at a QR code will open and scan the restaurant's digital menu.

Menu Vision is available on iOS and Android, accessible from a business's media gallery or from the business page menu section. The original launch in October 2025 was part of a broader product release that also introduced the Yelp Host and Yelp Receptionist automated call answering services.

Advertiser tools and AI support chatbot

The Spring Release also introduces several updates targeted at businesses managing Yelp advertising. A new AI-powered support chatbot for advertisers is live inside the Business Owner Account (BOA). Built on large language models, the chatbot replaces fixed menus and scripted responses with a conversational interface that can address billing questions, account issues, and troubleshooting. When an issue requires human involvement, the chatbot routes the conversation to Yelp's support team.

Yelp has also updated the visual design of Yelp Ads, with cleaner layouts and smoother interactions in search results. During campaign preview, advertisers now see their real-time star rating and review count - as it would appear to a consumer - before the campaign goes live. Once ads are active, new performance summaries display impressions, clicks, and customer interactions. Personalised recommendations surface suggestions such as adding photos or refining service offerings to help optimise campaigns.

Businesses without photos on their Yelp page can now scan their website to import high-quality images for use in ads, removing a common barrier to campaign setup.

A new set of lead management tools is also part of this release. Status labels and filters in the Yelp for Business inbox allow business owners to see at a glance whether each lead is in a contacted, scheduled, in-progress, or completed state. Customers can request quotes from multiple businesses simultaneously while business owners can manage incoming leads and nearby projects from a single inbox view.

The trust data behind the design choices

The timing of the Spring Release is connected to research Yelp published jointly with Morning Consult on April 14, 2026 - a week before this product launch. The study, covering 2,202 U.S. adults, found that while 65% of respondents had used an AI-powered search tool in the past six months, only 15% said they trust those platforms "a lot." The survey was conducted from February 26 to 28, 2026.

The research also found that nearly three out of four people said they want to see ratings and reviews from real customers when using AI search tools to find local businesses. Separately, 65% of respondents said it is important to be able to complete tasks on trusted platforms when using AI for local business search. Both figures feed directly into the design logic of Yelp Assistant: the decision to ground every response in user-generated content, and to make transaction completion - not just discovery - available inside the same interface.

This is not a neutral framing. Yelp operates in a data licensing business that competes with and supplies content to AI search platforms. Yelp's Q3 2025 earnings showed that other revenue - which includes data licensing, API access, and Yelp Guest Manager - grew 17% year-over-year to $19 million, driven by demand from AI search providers accessing Yelp's local business content. AI search API calls to Yelp increased 20 times over the prior year, with the annual run rate for AI search-related revenue crossing $10 million.

What this means for the local advertising market

For marketers and advertisers working with local businesses, the release represents a structural change in how consumers discover and convert on Yelp. The traditional flow - search, browse a business page, call or click through to a website - compresses into a single chat thread. That changes where the conversion opportunity sits and whose system mediates it.

Yelp's $270 million acquisition of Hatch in January 2026 - the company's largest AI investment to date - is designed to extend this model. Hatch automates lead management and follow-up communications for services businesses, with integrations spanning ServiceTitan, Jobber, HubSpot, and Google Local Services Ads. The combination means that a consumer interaction inside Yelp Assistant could, in principle, trigger automated follow-up communications through a business's existing workflow tools without any manual intervention.

The competitive landscape for local AI discovery is becoming more crowded. Amazon integrated Yelp into Alexa+ in December 2025, enabling home services bookings through voice. Apple is reportedly preparing to introduce ads in Apple Maps. Google has deployed agentic calling features that contact local businesses on behalf of users. Each of these developments is pushing local search from a referral model - where platforms send users to businesses - toward a completion model, where the platform handles the transaction itself.

Yelp's positioning in this shift relies on the volume and quality of its community-generated content. Project submissions through Yelp Assistant increased 400% year-over-year in Q2 2025, before today's broader rollout. The 2025 Fall Product Release in October expanded Yelp Assistant to restaurant, retail, and attraction pages for the first time; this Spring Release makes it the central interface of the app itself, through a dedicated tab on both iOS and Android.

Nicole Lund, VP of Product, described the platform-level significance in a Q&A accompanying the announcement: "Yelp Assistant represents an entirely new discovery channel for businesses on Yelp. Instead of scrolling through search results, customers can describe exactly what they need - even something really specific - and Yelp Assistant surfaces the most relevant businesses and helps them take action right in the conversation."

The upcoming expansion of Yelp Assistant to all business pages and to desktop is not yet dated. Currently, the full transactional version operates on eligible business pages - restaurants, retail shops, and attractions - with broader availability scheduled for later in 2026.

Additional features in the Spring Release

Several other updates round out the release. A new AI-powered personalisation model for the Yelp iOS home feed surfaces more relevant content, increases updates from accounts a user follows, adds immersive full-screen videos, and improves nearby recommendations. Natural language search within a business's media gallery allows users to describe a photo they are looking for conversationally - for example, searching for "outdoor seating at night" within a restaurant's photo library - rather than browsing all images manually.

Expanded Popular Offerings, which uses large language models to identify the most frequently mentioned services and items in reviews, now covers more categories and appears across all platforms on business pages.

AI-powered before-and-after photo labels are forthcoming on iOS for services businesses. The system will automatically organise transformation photos - used widely in categories such as hair, landscaping, auto detailing, and real estate - across more than 100 visually-driven service categories.
