A zero-click search is a query that ends without the searcher clicking on any result. Someone types a question, reads what the results page shows, and then leaves, searches again or simply stops. No website receives a visit. The term exists because search engines stopped being only directories of links. Once Google began answering questions on its own pages, the share of searches producing no outbound traffic became measurable and, for publishers and advertisers, commercially significant. It is a behavioural measure rather than a product or a setting, and it is estimated by outside researchers from panels of users, not reported by the search engines.
How the rate is measured
The standard method relies on clickstream panels: large samples of consenting users whose browsers or devices log every URL they load. Jumpshot supplied the early panel; Datos, a Semrush company, and Similarweb supply the current ones. An analyst isolates each load of a Google results page and classifies what happens next. The outcome falls into one of five buckets: a click on an organic listing, a click on a paid ad, a click to a Google-owned property such as YouTube or Maps, a new query, or no further action.
SparkToro's 2024 study, built on Datos data, illustrates the arithmetic. It found that 58.5% of United States Google searches and 59.7% of EU searches ended without a click. Of those, according to SparkToro, roughly 37% of all searches ended the session outright and about 22% were followed by a different query. The study then expressed the residue as a ratio: for every 1,000 searches, 360 clicks reached the open web in the United States and 374 in the EU.
Definitions do the heavy lifting. Some studies treat a click into YouTube or Maps as a click; others count it as zero-click because no third-party site benefits. SparkToro's June 2026 study counted organic, paid and Google-property clicks as clicks while treating follow-up searches as non-clicks. According to Search Engine Land, it weighted the sample two-thirds mobile and one-third desktop and excluded the Google mobile app, where zero-click behaviour may run higher.
Site owners see the same phenomenon from the other end. Google Search Console reports impressions and clicks per page, and the ratio between them, click-through rate, falls as more answers resolve on the page. Seer Interactive tracked 3,119 informational queries across 42 organisations and recorded organic click-through falling from 1.76% to 0.61%where an AI Overview appeared, with paid click-through dropping from 19.7% to 6.34%. Experiments are rarer. Saharsh Agarwal of the Indian School of Business and Ananya Sen of Carnegie Mellon randomly assigned 1,065 desktop Chrome users to see or not see AI Overviews and measured a 39.8% fall in outbound organic clicks and a 34.5% rise in zero-click searches, with sponsored clicks flat.
Origin and evolution
The behaviour predates the name. Google launched the Knowledge Graph in May 2012, placing facts drawn from its own database beside results. In January 2014 it introduced featured snippets, which quote an excerpt from a website at the top of the page. Google later acknowledged, in its own account of the feature, that publishers worried at launch that searchers would read the snippet and never visit the source.
Rand Fishkin, co-founder of SparkToro and previously founder of Moz, turned the concern into a number. SparkToro's own retrospective puts his first measurement in 2016, at roughly 45%. The figure that spread came on August 13, 2019, when Fishkin reported Jumpshot data showing that in June 2019 zero-click searches passed 50% of browser-based Google searches for the first time, at 50.33%. "We've passed a milestone in Google's evolution from search engine to walled-garden," he wrote. Avast shut Jumpshot down in January 2020, interrupting the series.
Scrutiny followed in Washington. In written answers to the House Judiciary antitrust subcommittee after its July 29, 2020 hearing, Google argued that a search without a click does not mean a user was kept on Google's properties. Fishkin's next study, using Similarweb data for 2020, put the rate at 64.82%. Danny Sullivan, Google's public search liaison, replied on March 24, 2021 that the claim rested on flawed methodology and that "we've sent more traffic to the open web every year since Google was first created."
Generative answers changed the stakes. AI Overviews reached United States users on May 14, 2024, and each subsequent measurement was read against that date. Similarweb put the zero-click share of news-related searches at 69% in May 2025, up from 56% a year earlier. Ahrefs found AI Overviews cut clicks to top-ranking pages by 34.5% in April 2025 and by 58% in a February 2026 follow-up across 300,000 keywords.
Why it matters for marketers
Search referrals fund much of the open web, and the open web carries much of programmatic display. When a query resolves on the results page, the page view that would have generated ad impressions, affiliate commissions or subscription prompts never happens. Matthew Prince, chief executive of Cloudflare, said in May 2025 that Google once sent one visitor for every two pages it crawled, a ratio that had since deteriorated to one visitor for every six.
The losses are uneven. Chartbeat data showed small publishers lost 60% of search referral traffic over two years, against 47% for medium publishers and 22% for large ones. Some are buying the traffic back: the hundred largest media publishers spent an estimated $113 million on paid search in July 2026, 274% more than three years earlier, according to Similarweb figures reported by Adweek.
Measurement is the second consequence. A brand named inside an answer is seen but not visited, so last-click models record nothing. Fishkin and SparkToro's Amanda Natividad have built a book on marketing for a traffic-starved webaround that gap, arguing that visibility on the results page should be treated as the placement rather than the route to one.
Limitations and disputes
The headline figures disagree by a factor of three. The Datos and SparkToro Q1 2026 State of Search report recorded United States zero-click searches at 22.4% in March 2026, and 19.6% across the EU and UK, from a desktop panel. The June 2026 study put the rate at 68.01%. PPC Land's analysis attributes the gap to definitions, device mix and panel composition, not to a change in behaviour. SparkToro itself cautions that its series stitches together Jumpshot, Datos and Similarweb panels, so year-on-year comparisons are imperfect.
A zero-click search is also not necessarily a lost visit. Sullivan's 2021 reply listed the benign cases: reformulated queries, simple facts such as weather or scores, direct calls to businesses and navigation into apps. He added that mobile results pages had grown from ten blue links to an average of 26 website links. Critics of the 2019 figure made a narrower version of the same point, arguing that click-to-call and map interactions were miscounted.
Google's current position concedes lower rates on some pages while disputing the aggregate. Liz Reid, head of Google Search, said on August 6, 2025 that "total organic click volume from Google Search to websites remains relatively stable year-over-year" and that click quality had risen. Pew Research Center found users clicked a traditional result 8% of the time when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one; Google called the methodology flawed and the query set skewed. The Agarwal and Sen experiment found no improvement in how users rated their experience, which sits awkwardly with the quality argument. Commercial interests run on every side: SparkToro sells audience research and Fishkin has a book to promote, Datos and Similarweb sell the panels, and Google sells the ads on the page.
Not the same as
AI Overviews are a Google feature that generates summaries above results. They are one cause of zero-click behaviour, not the behaviour itself, which was measured years before they existed.
Click-through rate is a ratio per result or per page, calculated from impressions on a search engine results page. Zero-click rate is calculated per search, across every outcome.
Zero-click content describes social posts that deliver their full value without an outbound link, a marketing strategy rather than a search statistic.
Zero-click exploits are security attacks requiring no user interaction. EchoLeak, catalogued as CVE-2025-32711, was a zero-click flaw in Microsoft 365 Copilot disclosed in June 2025.
Recent developments
Regulation has moved from the metric to the mechanism. The UK Competition and Markets Authority imposed its first binding conduct requirement on Google in June 2026, obliging it to let publishers opt out of AI Overviews and AI Modewithout losing search visibility, with substantive obligations due on December 3, 2026. The European Commission has had a formal investigation open since December 9, 2025, and Penske Media's 101-page antitrust complaint, filed on September 12, 2025, is pending in Washington.
Measurement remains partial. On August 31, 2026, Google completed the global rollout of generative AI reports in Search Console, which show impressions but no clicks or queries. As of September 2026, Google is also testing an AI contribution pilot that pays publishers when their content feeds Gemini, AI Overviews and AI Mode, with the calculation undisclosed. If it scales, compensation would attach to the answer rather than to the click.
