Augmented reality (AR) places computer-generated images, sound or text on top of a live view of the physical world, so that digital objects appear to share space with real ones. A phone camera drawing sunglasses onto a face and an app pinning a virtual sofa to a living-room floor are both examples. The idea exists because screens separate information from the place where it is needed; AR tries to put the two back together. For advertisers, it has become a creative format sold mainly by social platforms and retailers, with its own impression and viewability rules since April 2024.
The most cited definition comes from a 1997 survey by Ronald Azuma, which set three conditions: a system must combine real and virtual content, be interactive in real time, and register virtual objects in three dimensions. Hardware is left out, so a smartphone qualifies as readily as a headset.
How an AR experience works
Every session runs the same loop many times a second. A camera captures the scene. Software estimates the device's position from the image and motion sensors, a process called tracking, and identifies surfaces, faces or bodies on which content can be anchored. A rendering engine then draws the 3D asset at the right angle, scale and lighting, compositing it onto the camera feed or, on see-through glasses, onto transparent lenses. Azuma named registration and sensing errors among the hardest problems in the field, and a drifting virtual object remains the clearest sign of a weak build.
Consumer AR became practical once platform owners built that loop into phone operating systems. Apple released ARKit on June 5, 2017, and Google released an ARCore preview on August 29, 2017, according to Vieyra Software. Neither needed hardware beyond a standard camera and sensors.
The IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau) and the Media Rating Council (MRC) group ad experiences into five types: virtual try-ons, which apply a product to a body or face; visualisations, which place a product in the user's surroundings; world effects; face effects; and AR games. Cameras are self-facing or world-facing, and most experiences start with a trigger, such as a tap, a facial expression or even the weather.
From Boeing wiring boards to sponsored lenses
Ivan Sutherland built an optical see-through head-mounted display in 1968. The term itself is traced to Boeing researchers Tom Caudell and David Mizell, who built a head-mounted system to guide aircraft wiring. Sources disagree on the date: some academic histories place the coinage in 1990, others in 1992, when the pair published what is often described as the first paper using the phrase. A 1994 paper by Paul Milgram and Fumio Kishino placed AR on a reality-virtuality continuum, and the ARToolKit tracking library followed in 1999.
Marketing waited for smartphones. Snapchat launched face-tracking Lenses in September 2015, and the first branded Lens debuted the following month, according to TechCrunch; The Drum identified 20th Century Fox as the buyer. Pokemon Go, released by Niantic on July 6, 2016, took location-based AR to a mass audience, and its Japanese launch that month carried a first paying sponsor, McDonald's Japan, which turned around 3,000 restaurants into battle locations. Facebook's Spark AR platform opened camera effects to brands in 2017.
Retail followed. Pinterest introduced AR Try On for home decor in early 2022 across more than 80,000 shoppable Pins, stating that Pinners were five times more likely to purchase from Try On-enabled Pins, a figure it supplied itself. Google rolled out AR and virtual reality shopping tools in March 2024, then extended virtual try-on to apparel Shopping ads in May 2024.
How AR ads are counted
Until 2024 each platform reported AR engagement on its own terms. The IAB and MRC released draft Augmented Reality Advertising Measurement Guidelines on February 8, 2024 and published version 1.0 on April 23. Zoe Soon, vice president of the IAB Experience Center, said the US AR advertising market was projected to generate 1.2 billion dollars that year. Snap, Niantic, Uber and GroupM sat on the task force.
An AR session starts when the experience is initialised with the camera enabled by the user and ends when the camera is switched off or the ad closed. An AR impression must occur inside a session, be filtered for invalid traffic and at minimum begin to render. A viewable AR impression needs at least 50 percent of the creative visible for one continuous second, or two seconds for video.
Three AR-specific tests follow. The visible part of the ad must cover at least 1.5 percent of the screen, so an ad filling 2 percent but half obscured fails. Its angle to the screen should not exceed 55 degrees on any axis, and occlusion must be accounted for. Measurers poll every 200 milliseconds and may count a second as viewable if three of five polls succeed, a concession to ads glimpsed through, say, a fence.
Engagement is tracked as engaged rate, the share of impressions where a trigger fired, and engaged duration. The guidelines also propose engaged-through conversion as an attribution category beside click-through and view-through. Fully immersive virtual reality and QR codes are excluded.
Most AR inventory is bought through platform self-serve tools rather than open exchanges. The guidelines call for standardised signals to flag AR placements in bid requests, an admission that none existed. Brands and agencies commission creative, often in tools such as Snap's Lens Studio; platforms control pricing and reporting.
Why the format matters for marketers
Scale sits in a handful of camera apps. As of the fourth quarter of 2025, Snap said AR Lenses were being used 8 billion times per day. Paid formats have multiplied, with Sponsored AR Filters in April 2024 and Sponsored AI Lenses in April 2025; internal Snap data claimed the AI version reached 25 to 45 percent more daily impressions. Lens+ Payouts now pay developers on subscriber engagement, raising the standard branded lenses compete against.
Commerce is the second driver, since try-on addresses the uncertainty behind returns in apparel, beauty and eyewear. Location is a third: coverage of location-based advertising flagged AR as a way to tie offers to physical places. The IAB's AI use case map lists AR among interactive creative applications.
Limitations and disputes
Platform dependency comes first. Meta shut its Spark platform for third-party tools on January 14, 2025, removing brand-built AR effects from Facebook, Instagram and Messenger, according to Meta, which said it was shifting resources toward glasses.
Biometric privacy is the second risk. Face-based try-ons map facial geometry, and Illinois' Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) sets damages of 1,000 dollars per negligent violation and 5,000 dollars per reckless one. Charlotte Tilbury agreed a 2.925 million dollar settlement without admitting wrongdoing, according to Top Class Actions, and a judge denied M.A.C. Cosmetics' motion to dismiss a similar suit in June 2026, according to OpenClassActions.
Wearables extend the issue to bystanders. A report dated September 10, 2026 from Hamburg's data protection commissioner found that Ray-Ban Meta glasses create data protection problems mainly for people captured by the device. The targeting implications were examined in September 2024.
Measurement leaves room for divergence, since inactivity thresholds and angle limits may be set by each measurer if disclosed. The guidelines also concede that AR devices lack standardised user agents, complicating fraud detection. Hardware economics are unresolved: Meta's Reality Labs posted an operating loss of 4.03 billion dollars in the first quarter of 2026.
Not the same as
Virtual reality (VR) replaces the physical world; AR keeps it in view.
Mixed reality (MR) and extended reality (XR) are broader labels. On Milgram and Kishino's continuum, mixed reality spans everything between the real and virtual extremes, and XR is commonly used for all three. Apple presented Vision Pro, unveiled on June 5, 2023, as a spatial computer.
Generative virtual try-on is marketed alongside AR but works differently. Google's AI Mode try-on, launched on May 20, 2025, renders apparel onto an uploaded photograph rather than a tracked live view, failing Azuma's real-time test.
Smart glasses without displays are wearables, not AR hardware. Meta Ray-Ban Display, launched on September 17, 2025 at 799 dollars, added a display and opened to developers in May 2026.
Recent developments
Snap's hardware is the test most closely watched. Reporting in May 2026 put consumer Specs on course for an autumn launch; Snap priced them at 2,195 dollars and, with its second-quarter results, set a Los Angeles launch event for September 16, 2026. There, Evan Spiegel said Snap had partnered with Shopify to make its merchants' catalogue viewable in AR on Specs, according to Engadget. Shipping is slated for this autumn in the United States, the United Kingdom and France, according to Road to VR. Lens creation for Specs rose 28 percent year on year, Snap stated in its first-quarter 2026 letter.
On phones, AR is merging with generative AI. Snap counted nearly 38 billion GenAI Lens impressions since late 2025, and AI Sponsored Snaps, announced on April 28, 2026, carry the interactive logic into chat. Google has made virtual try-on in Lens subject to a 500 by 500 pixel image minimum from January 31, 2027, tying try-on eligibility to feed quality.
