Microsoft Advertising has switched on its Ad Preview Hub inside Performance Max campaigns, giving advertisers a way to inspect how automatically assembled creative will render across MSN, Bing Search, and Outlook before a campaign starts spending. Navah Hopkins, Microsoft Ads Liaison, announced the rollout in a LinkedIn post on July 28, 2026.
"Thrilled to share Ad Preview Hub is live in PMax campaigns!" Hopkins wrote. According to Hopkins, "Ad Preview Hub allows you to see previews of all asset types on eligible surfaces and devices."
The extension matters because Performance Max hands creative assembly to Microsoft's systems, which mix uploaded assets across search, native, and display placements. Advertisers running the campaign type on Microsoft's platform previously lacked a native way to check those combinations before delivery began.
Preview controls sit inside the asset group editor
According to Hopkins, the entry point is the asset group editor, where a "Preview ads" button sits to the left above the image preview. From that screen, advertisers adjust the settings and generate a link with a blue share button on the right.
Microsoft's help documentation, which carries a 2026 copyright notice, describes the Ad Preview Hub as a centralized tool for seeing what ads will look like before a campaign goes live, built to simplify the review process across devices, placements, and publishers. "The previews reflect what your customers will see during ad delivery," according to the documentation.
Dropdown menus filter what appears on screen. The Device menu offers Computer or Smartphone. The Publisher menu for Performance Max campaigns lists MSN, Bing Search, or Outlook. An Asset menu switches previews between uploaded images, while an Extension menu isolates individual extension types. A Full view toggle then places each preview within the context of the publisher's webpage, and a Full view (all) toggle applies the same treatment to every preview at once.
One caution accompanies the feature. "Please note that ads may differ from their previews as placements update," according to Microsoft, and "Variations may occur due to publisher format changes." A preview, in other words, is a snapshot rather than a guarantee.
Eight asset categories and one irreversible choice
Campaign creation determines what the hub can display. For Performance Max, the documented flow begins with a goal of Drive conversions or Sell products, followed by a political advertising declaration that requires either confirming the campaign is not intended for political advertising or removing any political advertising before proceeding. Advertisers then name an asset group, add Text guidelines, enter a Final URL, and load assets across eight categories: Images, Logos, Short headlines, Long headlines, Descriptions, Business name, Call to action, and Extensions.
Product advertising introduces a constraint that outlasts the preview stage. Delivering Product ads across the Microsoft Advertising Network requires selecting a Merchant Center store during campaign setup. Skipping the store means a new campaign becomes necessary if product advertising enters the picture later. The selection is also permanent for that campaign. "Once you select a store for this campaign, you cannot change it," according to Microsoft.
A shareable link with a 30-day clock
Sharing is where Microsoft concentrates the feature's value. Selecting Share generates a link for distribution to teams, stakeholders, or clients. According to the documentation, "This is a public, view-only link that expires after 30 days."
Hopkins characterized access in narrower terms. "No one except the link generator and those who get sent the link can access the link," according to the post. The two descriptions are compatible - the link requires no sign-in, and only holders of the URL can open it - but the calendar sets the harder limit. Approval cycles that stretch past a month mean generating a fresh link.
"This is a fast and secure way to get sign off from stakeholders," Hopkins wrote. "Rather than needing to take screenshots or import in files to third party tools, you can share a single link directly with approvers who may want to see different placement/asset combinations."
Early reactions to the post pointed at the same workflow gap. Erum Shaheen, a Google Ads strategist, commented that "This is a 'must-have' feature in Bing Ads and will help advertisers to see their ads well before starting to spend their ad budget." Mo R., an AI automation consultant for marketing agencies, wrote that "a shareable link instead of screenshotting everything for approval seems like it should've existed already." The post gathered 38 reactions, four comments, and one repost within five days of publication.
AI surfaces drive the reasoning
Hopkins offered three arguments for the feature, and the first reaches beyond workflow convenience. "PMax needs flexibility to adapt to AI surfaces," according to the post. "By sharing how the assets will appear, you can make it easier to get sign off on the ad type."
Her second point concerns creative quality. "Assets need to be able to stand on their own as well as pair with others," Hopkins wrote. "By going through the preview, you can understand if any are missing the mark."
Microsoft has spent two years publishing performance figures that explain why AI placements sit at the center of that reasoning. Performance Max multimedia ads in Copilot delivered a 3.5x boost in impressions compared to standard adsbetween June and August 2024, according to Microsoft data, with product ads gaining fivefold and conversion rates in Copilot running 63% higher than traditional search ads. Creative assembled algorithmically for those surfaces has been difficult to inspect in advance, which is precisely the gap the preview addresses.
Staggered availability across campaign types
Access remains uneven. According to Microsoft's documentation, the feature is currently available for Audience campaigns, while some advertisers are enabled for Performance Max campaigns and the remainder are told the capability is coming soon. Hopkins noted the same sequencing in the post: "Ad Preview Hub is already available for Audience ads."
Publisher lists differ by campaign type as well. Audience campaigns, which span Display, Native, and Video ad types, preview against MSN and Outlook, with previews available during campaign creation or while editing existing ads through the Ads & extensions menu. That creation flow presents Build brand awareness, Drive conversions, or Generate leads as goals, alongside a Skip option, and Native ads support previewing individual image or video assets through selectable thumbnails. The Performance Max walkthrough adds Bing Search as a third publisher option. The documentation's general statement covers a narrower footprint: "We currently show ad previews for MSN and Outlook placements, with more publishers coming soon." Which publishers join the roster, and when the remaining Performance Max accounts gain access, are questions the documentation leaves open.
Why previews matter for the marketing community
The release extends a pattern PPC Land has tracked across every major automated campaign format: platforms pushing creative assembly deeper into algorithms while retrofitting inspection tools around them.
On Microsoft's side, the sequence has accelerated. The company launched Performance Max globally in March 2024. Auction mechanics were clarified on December 18, 2025, when Microsoft confirmed exact match keywords override every other campaign type, including Performance Max - a disclosure that also arrived through Hopkins. Customer acquisition goals and automated assets followed in January 2026. Placement reports gained conversion, click, and spend data on May 7, 2026, moving Microsoft's reporting beyond what comparable cross-channel formats offered at the time. Product explorer arrived for US retailers on June 16, 2026, another feature Hopkins announced on LinkedIn after joining Microsoft as Ads Liaison in June 2025 with direct product team reporting.
Google has run a parallel program on its own Performance Max product. The company introduced channel-level performance data, full search terms reporting, and asset-level metrics on April 30, 2025, then added network segmentation to asset reports on September 30, 2025. TikTok gave its Smart+ automated campaigns an ad-preview capability on January 21, 2026, letting advertisers see every possible creative combination before a campaign goes live.
A distinction separates those efforts. Reporting tools explain what already served; preview tools show what will serve. Microsoft's hub belongs to the second category, and preview tooling carries a long lineage in search advertising - Google's Ad Preview and Diagnosis tool gained an audience filter back in October 2018. What changed with automated formats is the scale of the problem. A traditional text ad presents a bounded set of variations. A Performance Max asset group combining eight asset categories, three publishers, and two device classes produces far more permutations than a screenshot-based approval process can reasonably cover.
For agencies, the operational shift is concrete. Creative approval on the Microsoft platform previously ran through screenshots or file exports into third-party mockup tools, each capturing a single placement at a single moment. A native link that lets an approver flip between publishers, devices, and asset combinations replaces that assembly work, though the 30-day expiry ties the artifact to a deadline and the previews remain subject to the publisher format changes Microsoft itself flags. Whether the feature reaches every Performance Max account before the next wave of AI ad surfaces arrives is the question the staggered rollout now poses.
