Amazon dated its John Madden biopic for November 18 on August 6, 2026, dropping a football-themed original into the middle of the NFL calendar on a streaming service where advertising is the default setting for a global audience the company last counted at 315 million.
The announcement came through Amazon's corporate news site, written by Tyler Greenawalt and published August 6, 2026. It is a consumer document. It names a date, a cast, a director and a set of Prime membership prices. It says nothing about ad load, commercial terms or sponsorship packages. For media buyers planning the fourth quarter, however, the date itself carries information that the release copy does not spell out.
A November date inside the football calendar
According to Amazon, Madden will be available to stream globally starting November 18 on Prime Video, which is included with an Amazon Prime membership. Global availability at launch distinguishes the title from the licensing arrangements that govern much of the catalogue, where rights are carved up by territory and premiere dates drift by weeks between markets.
November 18, 2026 falls on a Wednesday. The NFL regular season will be roughly two-thirds complete. Amazon holds exclusive rights to Thursday Night Football, and the 2026 season opens September 17 with Detroit Lions at Buffalo Bills, a schedule the company released on May 14 following its upfront presentation at the Beacon Theatre. A biopic about the most recognisable coach-turned-broadcaster in the sport therefore arrives on the same service, in the same week, as live football.
That adjacency is not incidental to how the platform sells itself. Amazon Ads vice president Alan Moss described Prime Video and live sports as a single advertising business rather than two separate inventory pools, a framing that treats scripted premieres and game windows as parts of one audience proposition.
The production
Madden is directed by David O. Russell, whose credits include Silver Linings Playbook and American Hustle, from a script he wrote following an earlier version by Cambron Clark, according to the announcement.
Nicolas Cage plays Madden. Christian Bale plays Raiders owner Al Davis. John Mulaney appears as EA Sports founder Trip Hawkins, Kathryn Hahn as Madden's wife Virginia, Sienna Miller as Carol Davis, and Shane Gillis in an unspecified role.
Todd Black produces through his Escape Artists banner alongside partners Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch. Jonathan Shukat produces with Russell and Mathew Budman. David Bloomfield of Escape Artists is executive producer.
Amazon's own synopsis frames the film as tracing Madden's path from a Super Bowl-winning partnership with Davis to the construction of the video game franchise, calling it a "celebration of a brilliant mind" whose personality carried beyond sport. That is marketing copy. The verifiable material sits in the biographical record.
The subject
Madden was head coach of the Raiders from 1969 to 1978. According to Amazon, he compiled a career winning percentage of .759, the highest among coaches with more than 100 career victories, and led the team to victory in Super Bowl XI.
After retiring from the sideline he moved into broadcasting, working for all four major American networks across a three-decade career. In 1988 he partnered with EA Sports, lending his name and analytical vocabulary to what became the Madden NFL series. He died on December 28, 2021, at the age of 85.
The video game half of that biography has acquired fresh commercial relevance. Electronic Arts launched EA Advertising on June 15, 2026, opening its console, mobile and PC titles to brands through dynamic in-game placements and a proprietary ad server built for the Frostbite engine. In making its case to advertisers, the company said fans play the equivalent of 23,000 NFL seasons every day inside Madden NFL. A film about the origin of that franchise now premieres on a streaming service roughly five months after the franchise itself became a formal advertising surface.
Why the date matters for inventory
Amazon reported second-quarter 2026 results on July 30, 2026. Advertising services revenue reached 19.8 billion dollars, a 26% year-over-year increase and the strongest growth rate across the six quarters disclosed in the company's supplemental data. Chief executive Andy Jassy told investors that inventory on Thursday Night Football, the NBA, the WNBA and NASCAR had sold out during the period.
Sold-out live sport is the operative context. When a platform cannot sell more game-window impressions, incremental demand has to find somewhere else to sit. Premium scripted originals in adjacent weeks are one of the few places it can go. A football biopic launching between Thursday night games is, in inventory terms, the closest thing to a game window that is not a game.
The scale underneath that inventory was last disclosed in February. Amazon reported fourth-quarter 2025 advertising revenue of 21.3 billion dollars, up 23%, and put Prime Video's global ad-supported audience at 315 million viewers, against roughly 200 million disclosed in April 2024.
Football has a measurable pull on that audience. During October 2025, Prime Video captured 6.4% of total television viewing on Thursdays, roughly three points above its monthly average, according to viewing data covering the period.
The commercial architecture behind the premiere
Advertising became the default on Prime Video in January 2024 in the United States, with the United Kingdom, Canada, Germany and Austria following in February 2024 and France, Italy, Spain, Mexico and Australia arriving later that year. Ad-supported availability had reached 16 countries by the end of 2025.
The tier structure changed in the spring. Amazon replaced its 2.99-dollar ad-free add-on with Prime Video Ultra at 4.99 dollars per month from April 10, 2026, a 67% increase packaged with 4K streaming, Dolby Atmos audio, five concurrent streams and 100 offline downloads. Content access is identical across tiers. Madden will reach every subscriber on November 18. Only the commercial break differs.
Base membership pricing is unchanged. According to Amazon, Prime costs 14.99 dollars a month or 139 dollars annually in the United States. Discounted routes exist at half the standard cost: Prime for Young Adults covers ages 18 to 24 and college students with a six-month trial before 7.49 dollars a month or 69 dollars a year, while Prime Access serves qualifying government-assistance recipients at 6.99 dollars a month after a 30-day trial. Those tiers matter to buyers because they determine which demographics sit inside the ad-supported base rather than outside it.
Measurement and targeting infrastructure has accumulated in visible stages. Amazon enabled zip code-level ad targeting for Prime Video on October 31, 2025, launching in the United States only and extending to Canada, Mexico and Brazil in July 2026, nine months later. Amazon Marketing Cloud added Prime Video viewership signals on November 11, 2025, exposing content title, content type and show-level engagement metrics inside the clean room. Dynamic TV Creative followed on May 11, 2026, generating creative variants keyed to purchase journey rather than geography.
Guaranteed delivery arrived earlier still. Amazon introduced programmatic guaranteed deals for Prime Video in August 2024 across three structures: run-of-service across all ad-supported content, contextual deals targeting specific genres or title groups, and audience-based deals. Contextual deals are the mechanism through which a buyer would attach a campaign to a sports biopic rather than to the catalogue at large.
Formats built around content
Interactive and shoppable formats arrived on Prime Video in May 2024, including pause ads, brand trivia units and remote-activated shopping. Amazon Ads research published in January 2026, drawn from a survey of more than 7,800 consumers conducted with Publicis Media and the research firm Latitude, reported that 79% of respondents found interactive video ads more engaging than standard video and 78% found them more attention-grabbing. Those figures come from Amazon's own commissioned research and have not been independently verified.
The announcement also references two consumer-facing features with commercial edges. X-Ray supplies behind-the-scenes material during playback. Shop the Show connects on-screen items to purchasable listings. Neither is described as an advertising product in the release, and Amazon has not said whether either will be enabled for Madden.
The wider surface is larger than the ad-supported originals catalogue suggests. According to Amazon, customers can access more than 800 free ad-supported television channels regardless of Prime membership, alongside third-party subscriptions sold through the interface including Paramount+, MGM+, Apple TV, HBO Max, Peacock, FOX One and Crunchyroll.
A pattern rather than a one-off
Madden joins a sports non-fiction line that Amazon lists as including Earnhardt, Taurasi, AIR, Kelce and Novak Djokovic: The Wolf in Winter. Sports-adjacent storytelling has become a recurring category on the service, and it sits alongside live rights rather than competing with them.
The studio pipeline continues past November. Amazon MGM Studios used its May 11, 2026 upfront to order a Fourth Wing adaptation, date Rings of Power Season 3 for November and renew Reacher and Jury Duty. The Thomas Crown Affair reaches theatres on March 5, 2027, according to the announcement.
What Amazon did not say
The release contains no runtime, no rating, no theatrical window and no marketing spend. It does not indicate whether Madden will be positioned inside Thursday Night Football broadcasts, whether contextual deal packages will be assembled around it, or how many advertising breaks a subscriber on the standard tier will encounter.
Nor does it address rights beyond streaming. The film premieres globally on a single date, which removes the territorial staggering that complicates campaign planning for licensed content, but availability of ad-supported inventory is not the same as availability of the title. Prime Video advertising operated in 16 countries during 2025, a smaller footprint than the platform's distribution.
For buyers, the useful output of an announcement like this one is a fixed date in a quarter where live sport is already sold out. Everything else remains to be disclosed.

The announcement affects media buyers planning fourth-quarter connected television campaigns, agencies negotiating Prime Video contextual deals, and publishers tracking streaming inventory supply.
What: A global premiere date of November 18, 2026 for Madden, a biographical film about the Raiders coach turned broadcaster turned video game namesake, on a streaming service where advertising is the default tier and where live sports inventory sold out during the second quarter of 2026.
When: Announced August 6, 2026. Premiere set for November 18, 2026, roughly two-thirds of the way through an NFL season that opens on Prime Video with Thursday Night Football on September 17, 2026.
Where: Prime Video globally, included with an Amazon Prime membership priced at 14.99 dollars a month or 139 dollars a year in the United States. Prime Video advertising operated in 16 countries during 2025, a narrower footprint than the film's distribution.
Why: The date places a football-themed original inside a quarter in which Amazon has told investors its live sports inventory is exhausted. With advertising revenue at 19.8 billion dollars for the second quarter of 2026 and an ad-supported audience last counted at 315 million viewers, scripted titles adjacent to sport carry commercial weight beyond their entertainment value. The announcement discloses none of the advertising terms, leaving ad load, contextual packaging and format availability unresolved.
