Yelp today said its voice AI product for restaurants has handled more than 1 million calls since October 2025 and opened the system to counter-service operators for the first time, adding an OpenTable integration, native pickup ordering and 16 additional languages.

The announcement, distributed at 7:00 AM Eastern Daylight Time on July 28, 2026, sets out both a usage figure and a widening of scope. According to Yelp, Yelp Host has fielded more than 1 million calls, which the company describes as the equivalent of nearly two years of continuous phone conversation, growing at an average of 38% month over month from its October 2025 launch through June 2026. Alongside that milestone the company introduced more than a dozen updates, including the OpenTable connection, food ordering for pickup, custom voice options and expanded reporting.

The shift matters less for the milestone number than for who the product can now reach. Until today, Yelp Host answered calls for table-service restaurants tied to Yelp Guest Manager. Quick-service, fast-casual and takeout-focused operators had no route in. Both changes announced today address that: one through a reservation platform Yelp does not own, the other through the point-of-sale layer that counter-service kitchens actually run on.

A milestone measured in phone time

Yelp Host became available on October 21, 2025, as part of a fall product release that bundled more than 35 features across the platform, including Menu Vision, an expanded Yelp Assistant and a companion product for services businesses called Yelp Receptionist. At the time the agent handled reservations, modifications, cancellations and wait times through Yelp Guest Manager, with SMS follow-up for menus and confirmations.

The 38% monthly compounding figure covers eight months. Yelp has not disclosed the number of restaurants using the product, the distribution of call volume across those locations, or how many of the 1 million calls ended in a completed booking or order. Growth rates expressed as monthly averages from a small base can flatten quickly, and the company gave no comparison against the preceding quarter.

One operator quoted in the announcement supplied a labour figure. "We had no idea how many opportunities we were missing to connect with our guests. Missed calls meant missed catering inquiries, missed private events, and missed guest connections. Since turning on Yelp Host, we've saved 80 hours of staff time each week, allowing our team to redirect their focus to creating a better experience for every guest who walks through our doors," said Alyssa Gangeri, Pastry Chef and Operating Partner at The Butter Milk Ranch, according to the company.

That is a single-site claim, not a platform average. In its own blog post published the same day, Yelp put the typical front-of-house saving at up to 14 hours a week, and said the agent handled more than 40,000 calls across the platform over Mother's Day weekend.

OpenTable integration opens the installed base

The OpenTable connection is the structurally significant piece. According to Yelp, restaurants in the United States and Canada can now route OpenTable reservation calls to Yelp Host around the clock, with callers able to book, modify and cancel, and changes syncing back to OpenTable.

Before today, adopting Yelp Host effectively meant sitting inside Yelp Guest Manager. OpenTable, a subsidiary of Booking Holdings, is the larger reservation network in the North American market and a direct competitor to that product. Selling a voice agent into restaurants that use a rival booking system is a different commercial posture from selling one that only works with an in-house stack.

OpenTable itself has spent 2026 building outward. The company launched OpenTable Media on February 24, opening its diner audience to brand campaigns for the first time and joining the set of transaction platforms converting first-party behavioural data into ad inventory. Reservation records, unlike search queries, describe completed actions rather than stated intent.

Phone-based booking has been contested territory. In March 2025, restaurant operators reported that Google had replaced existing reservation integrations with its own Assistant calling feature, in some cases leaving venues showing no availability despite open tables. Google has since moved the same function up the stack: agentic restaurant booking arrived in AI Mode in the United States in November 2025 and reached the United Kingdom on April 10, 2026 with eight booking partners, OpenTable among them.

Native food ordering and the POS layer

The second expansion targets restaurants without tables to reserve. Yelp Host now takes pickup orders conversationally, without staff involvement, extending the product to quick-service, fast-casual and takeout-focused operators for the first time.

The mechanism is a connection through restaurant integration platform Stream, which links Yelp Host to a restaurant's existing point-of-sale system. According to Yelp, supported systems include Toast, Square and Clover among others, giving the agent access to the full menu and routing completed orders to the kitchen without manual entry. The company said food upselling and expanded payment settings are due this summer.

Yelp stated that Yelp Host charges no commission on those orders. That claim sits against a delivery marketplace economy built on percentage take rates. DoorDash has been converting its merchant base into an advertising business at speed, reporting 400,000 active advertisers on June 4, 2026 alongside a homepage placement format and offsite reach through Symbiosys. Uber Advertising followed days later with ride offers, brand takeovers on Eats and offsite inventory. Both platforms monetise the merchant relationship twice: once on the order, again on the media.

A phone order routed straight into a restaurant's own till bypasses both layers. Whether that materially shifts order volume depends on how many customers still call a takeout counter, a figure neither Yelp nor the delivery platforms publish.

Languages, voices and routing

The remaining updates are operational. Yelp Host added 16 languages and responds in the language it detects from the caller. Eight new voice options were added, with support for fully customised voices intended to match a restaurant's brand.

Multiple handoff numbers now route event requests, catering inquiries and vendor calls to specific team members automatically, a change aimed at the categories the Butter Milk Ranch quote identified as leaking value. For Yelp Guest Manager users, the agent can book against both in-house and online availability, meaning it can seat a caller when the public booking page shows a full night.

Reporting gained call evaluation metrics, after-hours call volume, reservation conversion rates, food order volumes and concurrent call handling. Conversion rate reporting is the notable addition: it moves the product from a call-answering utility toward something measurable against revenue, which is the basis on which restaurant software is typically renewed or cancelled.

"What stands out about Yelp Host is how it handles everything at once - every call gets answered, no delays, no dropped inquiries," said Jongpil Kim, CEO of MUN Korean Steakhouse, according to the announcement. "And the integration with Yelp Guest Manager makes it feel like one cohesive system rather than something bolted on." Kim participated in early beta testing of the product in 2025.

Pricing and the other revenue line

Yelp Host is priced at $249 per month, or $199 per month for Yelp Guest Manager customers. Sign-up runs through the Yelp Host tab inside a Yelp for Business account.

Subscription software matters to Yelp for a specific reason. Advertising revenue from restaurants, retail and other categories fell 6% year over year to $444 million in 2025, with total paying advertising locations down 3% and ad clicks down 7% from 2024, according to the company's fourth quarter results published on February 12, 2026. The restaurant advertiser base, in other words, has been contracting.

The line the company is pushing instead is what it calls other revenue: transactions, SaaS subscriptions and data licensing. First quarter 2026 net revenue rose 1% to $361 million while other revenue grew 75% year over year to a record $29 million, according to results posted on May 7, 2026. Chief financial officer David Schwarzbach said the company is targeting an annual run rate of $250 million in other revenue by the end of 2028, to be driven by Yelp Host, Hatch and data licensing.

Hatch arrived through acquisition. Yelp agreed to buy the lead-management platform for approximately $270 million in cash in January 2026, plus $30 million in employee retention payments, adding automated follow-up communications for services businesses. Data licensing has moved in parallel: Yelp licensed reviews, photos and business information to OpenAI for use inside ChatGPT on July 24, 2026, four days before today's announcement.

Second quarter 2026 results are scheduled for release after the market closes on August 6, 2026, according to a separate company statement. Those figures will be the first test of whether the call volume disclosed today converts into the subscription line.

Why the missed call became a product category

"Many restaurants struggle to answer every call, leading to missed reservations and lost orders that hurt their business," said Akhil Kuduvalli Ramesh, chief product officer at Yelp, according to the announcement. "Grounded in Yelp's trusted business data and designed to get smarter with every interaction, Yelp Host addresses this need by helping restaurants manage every inquiry and understanding each restaurant's needs in a way generic solutions can't match."

Ramesh holds the role that Craig Saldanha occupied when Yelp Host launched in October 2025, a change Yelp did not address in the announcement.

The wider context is where discovery now happens. A Foundation Marketing analysis of more than 28 million AI-generated responses found Yelp accumulating 512,680 citations across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode in the fourth quarter of 2025, 3.4 times the second-ranked source. Roughly 290,000 of those came from proximity-intent queries. If an assistant surfaces a restaurant and the diner then calls, the call is the conversion event, and an unanswered ring closes it.

Yelp has been building for that sequence on the consumer side too. Its expanded Yelp Assistant, announced April 21, 2026, completes bookings, orders and appointments inside the chat interface rather than handing users off. Today's update extends the same logic to the inbound leg.

What the marketing community faces next

For anyone buying media against restaurant demand, the practical question is attribution. A voice agent that books a table, takes a pickup order and routes a catering inquiry generates conversion events inside a subscription tool rather than inside an ad platform. Call tracking that terminates at the ring, rather than the outcome, will register the same volume regardless of what happened after pickup.

The commission point cuts in a similar direction. If a share of takeout volume migrates from marketplace apps to direct phone orders processed through a restaurant's own POS, the media budgets attached to those marketplaces lose some of the transaction base they were priced against. That is a slower effect than a platform policy change, and harder to see in a dashboard.

There is also a measurement gap in the announcement itself. Call volume, month-over-month growth and one operator's weekly hours saved describe activity. Reservation conversion rate, now available in reporting, describes outcome. Yelp disclosed the first set and not the second.
