Field of view is the angular extent of the world that a viewer can see at a given moment, usually expressed in degrees. In advertising it matters wherever an ad does not sit inside a flat browser window: painted onto a stadium wall in a console game, projected through augmented reality (AR) glasses, or mounted beside a motorway. There, the question web measurement answers with a pixel count becomes one of geometry: how large the ad appears, at what angle, and for how long. It entered measurement standards because an ad in a three-dimensional scene can be on screen yet too small or oblique to read.
How the geometry is measured
On a web page, viewability compares an ad's pixels with the browser viewport. The Media Rating Council (MRC), the US body that audits and accredits media measurement, sets that test at 50% of pixels for one continuous second for display and two seconds for video. Scenes rendered through a camera add three variables: apparent size, angle and occlusion.
The IAB/MRC Intrinsic In-Game (IIG) Advertising Measurement Guidelines 2.0, dated August 2022, apply them in sequence. An ad first has to qualify as an impression: the creative must load and begin to render. It then needs at least 50% of its pixels visible from the player's perspective for one continuous second, or two for video.
Size is tested next. The ad must cover at least 1.5% of the screen, counting only its visible portion. The guidelines supply the arithmetic: an ad filling 2% of the screen but half obstructed represents 1% and fails. Angle follows. Where a vendor can read rotation on the X, Y and Z axes separately, the document recommends no more than 55 degrees on any single axis relative to the screen, with 0 degrees meaning the ad faces the player and 180 degrees meaning it faces away. The guidelines warn that 50 degrees on two axes at once may already compress a creative past legibility.
Occlusion carries its own rules. Impressions with any obstruction, including interface overlays, must be reported separately, and an ad left with less than half its creative visible cannot count as viewable. An ad seen backwards or through a reflection is excluded. Vendors poll the scene every 200 milliseconds, which means five consecutive positive readings for display and ten for video. Because a player running past a fence produces broken readings, a vendor may instead count three positive polls out of five within a second, if disclosed.
The camera itself moves the numbers. In video games, according to Wikipedia, the field of view generally widens with the display's aspect ratio. A wider view shrinks every object's share of the screen, so the same in-game billboard, in the same position, can pass the 1.5% test on one monitor and fail it on another.
The IAB/MRC Augmented Reality Advertising Measurement Guidelines import both the 1.5% and 55-degree figures, stating they were taken from the in-game document for consistency. An AR session starts only once the user has enabled the camera.
Out of home: size measured in degrees
Out-of-home (OOH) media reverses the geometry. The MRC's combined OOH Measurement Standards, finalised in December 2025, define apparent size as the size a display appears within a person's field of view, in degrees, depending on distance and viewing angle.
The standards arrange metrics as a ladder. Gross impressions require presence in a display exposure zone while the screen works. Opportunity-to-see (OTS) impressions add a viewability condition, which for OOH means 100% of the creative on the asset for one second for static formats and two seconds for video. Likelihood-to-see (LTS) impressions need evidence of notice. Audience, the top rung, must account for an asset of at least 1.5% of the field of view and a maximum angle of 55 degrees per axis, thresholds the MRC says were adopted from the in-game and AR guidelines. Trees and buildings do not cancel an OTS impression, but they do rule out LTS.
National currencies run their own models. Route, the out-of-home audience measurement body for Great Britain, defines a visibility area as the zone from which at least 90% of a frame can be seen, spreading at 120 degrees from each side of the frame to a maximum distance set by frame size. According to Route, a viewer must fixate on an ad for at least 100 milliseconds, and its visibility adjustment applies an uplift of 1.5 to digital screens larger than 16.8 square metres and 1.2 to smaller ones. In the United States, Geopath, formerly the Traffic Audit Bureau, applies a Visibility Adjustment Indexderived from eye-tracking research to turn circulation into impressions.
In programmatic trading, IAB Tech Lab added a dooh object to OpenRTB in November 2022, with a qty object that lets one ad play count as more or fewer than one impression. IAB Australia's guide for programmatic DOOH buyers set out that arithmetic in August 2025.
Origin and evolution
The term comes from optics and photography. Advertising absorbed it along two tracks. Outdoor measurement weighted traffic counts by visibility long before digital standards existed; Route says its adjustment draws on eye-tracking studies accumulated over more than 25 years. Digital measurement arrived later. The IAB published in-game measurement guidelines in September 2009, five years before the MRC issued its viewable impression guidelines in June 2014.
When the IAB, IAB Tech Lab and MRC opened the IIG 2.0 draft for a 30-day comment period on June 14, 2022, MRC chief executive George W. Ivie said the earlier rules had "predated critical measurement concepts like ad viewability." Shailley Singh of IAB Tech Lab named "screen size, resolution, angle, and lighting" as factors the new rules would weigh.
On the outdoor side, the MRC's OOH Phase 1 standards of April 2024 deliberately left audience out. Phase 2, covering audience qualification, opened for public comment on July 28, 2025, and the combined final version of December 2025 is where the in-game angle and size thresholds entered billboard measurement.
Why it matters for marketers
The 2022 in-game guidelines cite 227 million US adults gaming more than 12 hours a week, against a US gaming share below 6% of digital ad spend. The IAB's Gaming Measurement Framework of June 26, 2025 lists viewability among the baseline metrics buyers should expect for intrinsic in-game placements. Verification has followed: IAS extended viewability measurement to Gadsme inventory at the turn of 2023, Comscore partnered with Anzu in July 2024, and EA built its own ad server for the Frostbite engine, with IAS as measurement partner.
For outdoor buyers, the angle and size rules decide which plays qualify as audience, and the MRC treats audience as the minimum basis for cross-media comparison. In August 2026, Big Happy became the first Veridooh partner to sell US DOOH on a verified CPM.
Wearables make field of view a product specification. Meta's Ray-Ban Display, priced at $799, carries a 600 by 600 pixel display with a 20-degree field of view, according to Meta figures reported by Road to VR. PPC Land had already asked in 2024 whether smart glasses would change digital advertising.
Limitations and disputes
The thresholds are recommendations rather than fixed rules. Both the in-game and AR guidelines let vendors adopt different angle limits with empirical support, so two accredited measurers can classify the same impression differently. The IIG document also concedes that consoles often cannot detect whether a connected television is switched off, and requires vendors to model the effect.
Portability is another open question. The same 1.5% and 55-degree figures now govern phone filters, console games and roadside billboards, with the MRC requiring vendors to justify whatever values they apply in practice. National systems do not line up either. Route's visibility area rests on 90% of a frame being visible, while the MRC's OTS condition for OOH requires 100% of the creative on the asset, so the two figures are not directly comparable.
Geometry also stops short of perception: the MRC states that viewability is not proof an ad was seen, and its attention guidelines with the IAB, released in November 2025, warn against treating attention as an outcome measure. Camera-based measurement carries privacy risk, too: in September 2026, Hamburg's data protection authority concluded that Ray-Ban Meta glasses expose bystanders without consent.
Not the same as
Viewport is the rectangle of a browser or app, counted in pixels. Field of view is an angle belonging to a viewer or camera.
Viewability is a pass-or-fail test built on pixels and time. Field of view is one of the inputs that 3D and OOH versions of that test add.
Exposure zone or visibility area describes the ground from which a display can be seen. It belongs to the asset, whereas field of view belongs to the person looking.
Device field of view is a hardware figure quoted by glasses and headset makers, describing how much of the wearer's vision a display can fill.
Recent developments
Snap opened pre-orders for its SPECS glasses on September 16, 2026 at $2,195, with a waveguide delivering a 51-degree field of view that Snap compares to a 115-inch screen about ten feet away. Meta, whose display sits well below that figure, opened the Ray-Ban Display to third-party developers in May 2026 through two software development kit routes.
The AR guidelines already list wearables and heads-up displays in scope, though their angle and size tests use a screen as the reference plane. As the MRC's remit keeps widening, and as outdoor screens move into programmatic pipes, the degrees in a viewer's sightline are becoming a trading variable.
