Advantage+ is the name Meta Platforms gives to the automated settings and campaign types inside Ads Manager that hand decisions about audience, placement, budget and creative to the company's machine learning systems. An advertiser supplies an objective, a budget, a country and a set of assets. The system decides who sees which version of the advertisement, on which surface, and at what price. Meta draws a distinction in the branding that most practitioners now ignore: plain Advantage features widen a setting a human has chosen, while Advantage+ features replace the choice, either for one component of a campaign or for the campaign as a whole.

The suite exists because the signal that made manual targeting work stopped arriving. Apple's App Tracking Transparency, shipped with iOS 14.5 in April 2021, removed most of the device-level identifiers Meta had used to follow people from an advertisement to a purchase. Modelling the missing link required more data than any one advertiser could supply and more compute than any advertiser could apply to it. Advantage+ is the commercial packaging of that shift: the platform absorbs the optimisation work, and the advertiser stops specifying inputs the platform can infer better.

The three automation levers

A campaign does not become Advantage+ because a toggle is labelled that way. In the Marketing API, Meta's programmatic interface for creating and managing advertisements, it becomes Advantage+ when three conditions hold at once, according to Meta's developer documentation. The read-only field advantage_state, queried through advantage_state_info at campaign level, reports the result.

Advantage+ budget requires the budget to sit at campaign level rather than ad set level, using a supported bid strategy. Meta's documentation lists four: lowest cost without a cap, which it recommends, plus cost cap, lowest cost with a bid cap, and lowest cost with a minimum return on ad spend.

Advantage+ audience requires either an explicit opt-in, expressed as targeting_automation with advantage_audience set to 1 on at least one ad set, or a configuration loose enough to qualify by default: default or suggested age and gender, a minimum age at or below 25, and no hard custom audience inclusion. Whatever an advertiser enters becomes a suggestion. Location and minimum age remain the practical hard boundaries.

Advantage+ placements requires that no placement targeting or exclusions be set at campaign level, so every surface across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and Audience Network is eligible. Exclusions applied at ad account level do not break the state.

Satisfy all three against an objective of OUTCOME_SALES, APP_INSTALLS or OUTCOME_LEADS and the campaign returns advantage_state of ADVANTAGE_PLUS_SALES, ADVANTAGE_PLUS_APP or ADVANTAGE_PLUS_LEADS. Disable any single lever and the whole state collapses to DISABLED. That all-or-nothing design is the mechanism through which a decision as small as excluding one placement removes an entire campaign from the automated tier.

Underneath sits Meta's ranking infrastructure. Andromeda, unveiled on 2 December 2024 and built for Nvidia Grace Hopper hardware, handles retrieval: narrowing tens of millions of candidate advertisements to thousands within the latency budget of a page load, with a reported 6% recall improvement and 8% gain in advertisement quality at launch. GEM, Meta's generative advertisement recommendation model, handles ranking. Neither is an Advantage+ feature as such. Both determine what Advantage+ actually delivers.

Origin and evolution

The Advantage brand was announced in March 2022 as a consolidation exercise, gathering existing automated products under one label. Lookalike expansion became Advantage lookalike, detailed targeting expansion became Advantage detailed targeting, campaign budget optimisation became Advantage campaign budget, automatic placements became Advantage+ placements, and dynamic experiences became Advantage+ creative.

The campaign type followed on 10 August 2022, when Meta announced Advantage+ shopping campaigns for global release to ecommerce and retail advertisers on 15 August. The pitch was creative volume and removed steps: up to 150 creative combinations tested automatically, and, according to the announcement, a 12% lower cost per purchase conversion against advertisers' business-as-usual campaigns in a study of 15 A/B tests. Advantage+ app campaigns, aimed at install objectives, ran on a parallel track.

Consolidation followed. A unified campaign creation structure arrived on 29 May 2025, replacing the separate shopping and app workflows with a single flow in which Advantage+ status is derived from settings rather than declared by a flag. Meta then deprecated the legacy APIs on 8 October 2025, blocking new legacy campaigns while leaving existing ones running. Marketing API v25.0, released on 18 February 2026, made the block absolute across all versions after a 90-day window closing on 19 May 2026. A developer blog post dated 13 February 2026 states that remaining shopping and app campaigns will be paused at v26.0, and that existing customer budget caps, which let advertisers ring-fence a share of spend for existing customers, have no equivalent in the new structure. The same post carries a typographical error, dating v25.0 to February 2025 rather than 2026.

The direction has been consistent. Detailed targeting exclusions were removed on 21 January 2025, with Meta citing 22% better performance without them. Dynamic media became the default for Advantage+ catalog ads from 1 September 2025, reaching full enforcement on 20 October. On 16 October 2025 a default appeared allowing up to 5% of budget to reach each excluded placement, which reclassified an exclusion as a preference.

Why the marketing community cares

Scale is the short answer. Meta's automated campaign suite passed an annual revenue run-rate above $75 billion in the second quarter of 2026, against $60 billion disclosed for the third quarter of 2025 and roughly $20 billion at the end of 2024. Total advertising revenue in that quarter reached $59.36 billion, up 27% year on year.

The model changes what a media buyer does. Audience research, placement testing and budget allocation, historically the bulk of the work, are no longer levers. Creative volume and measurement discipline are. Meta reinforced this with opportunity score, released globally in June 2025, which grades accounts against the company's own recommendations and reported 7% to 9% cost per acquisition improvement in testing.

Limitations and disputes

The most serious dispute concerns whether reported performance is real. One incrementality test cited in PPC Land's analysis of brand control against algorithmic efficiency found Advantage+ producing only 17% of the conversions Meta's own attribution reported, which points at demand harvesting rather than demand creation. Measurement integrity faces a separate challenge: a whistleblower complaint filed on 20 August 2025 by former product manager Samujjal Purkayastha alleged that return on ad spend for Shops ads had been inflated by 17% to 19% because shipping fees and taxes were counted as revenue. Meta has not resolved the allegations publicly.

Reliability is contested too. Documented incidents include Valentine's Day 2024, when cost per thousand impressions inflated roughly tenfold, and 23 April 2024, when daily budgets were exhausted within hours across thousands of accounts. Demographic drift is a structural complaint rather than a bug report: a system optimising towards clicks tends to find older, more click-prone users regardless of the brief.

Then there is control. Placement authority has narrowed step by step, and advertisers began reporting on 25 August 2026 that the placements control was disappearing entirely, replaced by value rules that permit a maximum bid decrease of 90%. A brand safety guarantee becomes a bid multiplier. Meta's justification is that Advantage+ placements deliver an 11.7% lower cost per action on average, a self-reported figure.

Critics frame the outcome in creative terms. Consultant Tom Goodwin's description of platform automation as producing "average-vertising" travels widely because it names the fear: competent output that nobody remembers. AdExchanger's characterisation of the product as a black box has proved durable for the same reason.

Advantage, Advantage+ and adjacent terms

Advantage+ sales campaigns are the campaign type. Advantage+ creativeAdvantage+ placements and Advantage+ catalog ads are settings and formats that carry the same prefix without automating a whole campaign, which is why the naming confuses. Advantage+ catalog ads, the rebranded dynamic product ads, run inside campaigns of any state.

Advantage campaign budget is the plain-Advantage cousin, formerly campaign budget optimisation, and is one of the three levers rather than a campaign type. Performance Max, launched by Google in 2021, is the nearest competitor: it captures existing search intent across Google inventory, where Advantage+ generates demand among people not currently searching. Andromeda and GEM are infrastructure, not products an advertiser configures.

Recent developments

Automation has moved outward from campaign settings towards the account itself. Meta shipped an Ads CLI on 29 April 2026 alongside Ads AI Connectors, giving external AI agents write access to campaign creation on the post-v25.0 surface. At Cannes Lions in June 2026 the company reported $4.13 returned per dollar of advertising spend across more than 1 million campaigns and previewed an end-to-end creative tool. Graph API and Marketing API v26.0 landed on 29 July 2026, removing Instagram Explore Feed and Messenger Stories as selectable placements.

Adoption figures keep climbing. Meta's first quarter of 2026 brought $56.31 billion in revenue and a doubling of AI creative tool users from 4 million to 8 million advertisers in roughly four months.

Summary

Who: Meta Platforms operates Advantage+. Ecommerce, app and lead generation advertisers use it, agencies manage it on their behalf, and Marketing API developers build against it.

What: A suite of AI automation covering audience, placement, budget and creative. Three levers, reported through the advantage_state field, determine whether a campaign qualifies, and disabling any one of them removes the state entirely.

When: The Advantage brand arrived in March 2022 and Advantage+ shopping campaigns rolled out from 15 August 2022. The structure was unified on 29 May 2025 and made mandatory with Marketing API v25.0 on 18 February 2026.

Where: Across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, Threads and Audience Network, configured in Ads Manager or through the Marketing API.

Why: Signal loss after App Tracking Transparency made manual targeting less effective and modelled optimisation more valuable. The suite now runs at an annual revenue run-rate above $75 billion, which explains why the manual alternatives keep disappearing rather than coexisting.
