Yelp opened its reservation and waitlist systems inside ChatGPT on August 10, 2026, letting users hold a table without leaving the conversation. The company disclosed no commercial terms, no restaurant count and no measurement framework for the bookings that result.
The announcement arrived as a post on Yelp's official blog, authored by Chad Richard, senior vice president of business and corporate development. It describes an integration with OpenAI that carries Yelp Reservations and Waitlist into the ChatGPT interface, so that a user who asks for dinner suggestions can complete the booking in the same session that produced the recommendation.
Coverage extends to what the company describes as thousands of top restaurants across the United States and Canada. Once a booking is made, according to Yelp, changes are handled through Yelp rather than through the chat window. That detail matters more than it first appears, because it establishes where the customer relationship sits after the transaction closes.
What the integration actually does
The mechanics described in the post are narrow and specific. ChatGPT users reach Yelp Reservations and Waitlist from inside the chat, book a table or join a queue, and receive confirmation without a browser handoff. Modifications route back to Yelp. The feature sits on top of an existing content layer that already surfaces Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details inside ChatGPT responses.
For restaurants, eligibility runs through Yelp Guest Manager, the company's front-of-house product. Operators already on that system gain the ChatGPT surface without a separate integration step, according to the announcement. Yelp frames the benefit as reach: the integration is described as helping restaurants "fill more tables and reach more guests exactly when discovery happens."
What the post does not include is equally notable. There is no figure for how many restaurants are live, no breakdown between the United States and Canada, no disclosure of whether Yelp pays OpenAI for placement or is paid for supplying the booking rail, and no description of how a restaurant would attribute a covered reservation to the ChatGPT surface rather than to Yelp's own applications. Nor does the post specify the technical route into ChatGPT, though it separately references application programming interfaces, apps built on the Model Context Protocol, and data partnerships as the mechanisms Yelp uses to reach AI platforms generally.
Seventeen days from licence to transaction
The integration lands seventeen days after a related agreement. On July 24, 2026, Yelp licensed its reviews, photos and business information to OpenAI for use inside ChatGPT, an arrangement under which the chatbot surfaces Yelp content as part of its answers. The August 10 announcement converts that content relationship into a transactional one.
The intervening fortnight was busy. On July 28, Yelp added an OpenTable integration and commission-free pickup ordering to Yelp Host, its voice agent for restaurants, disclosing more than one million calls handled since the product launched in October 2025 and average month-over-month growth of 38 percent. On July 30, the company published survey findings showing that 43 percent of Gen Z respondents trust AI summaries for restaurant decisions. On August 6, Yelp reported second quarter results, paused share repurchases and moved to pay down a $100 million credit facility.
That last disclosure supplies the commercial backdrop. Restaurant and retail advertising revenue fell 10 percent to $102 million in the quarter, while other revenue, the line that carries data licensing and subscription software, nearly doubled to $33 million. A company whose restaurant advertising base is contracting is building distribution into interfaces where the advertising model has not yet been defined.
The research Yelp cites, and what it says
The post opens its case with survey data. According to Yelp, research conducted with Morning Consult found that 65 percent of respondents consider the ability to take action, such as making a reservation, on trusted platforms important when using AI tools for local discovery. The post characterises 65 percent as nearly two-thirds.
A second set of figures follows: 65 percent of Americans have used AI search, only 15 percent trust it a lot, and 72 percent say AI platforms should always show where information comes from. Those numbers come from the same body of work. PPC Land covered the Morning Consult study when it was published on April 14, 2026, based on a survey of 2,202 United States adults, which also found that 63 percent of respondents double-check AI results against other sources.
The framing is coherent on its own terms. If consumers use AI tools but discount their output, a booking rail attached to a named review platform addresses the discount rather than the usage. It is also, unavoidably, a marketing argument constructed from a company's own commissioned research, and the same research is the reason the strategy carries a visible tension: Yelp is deepening its presence inside interfaces its own surveys describe as under-trusted.
A footnote that narrows a headline claim
The post states that for restaurants using Yelp Guest Manager, the integration expands access to the largest restaurant consumer network in the United States. An asterisk carries the basis for that claim, and the basis is narrower than the claim.
According to the footnote, the measurement comes from Comscore Media Metrix and covers the collective monthly average number of visitors to Yelp and Reserve with Google in the United States in 2024, compared with other Reserve with Google integrations. Three constraints follow from that construction. The comparison set is limited to platforms integrated with Reserve with Google rather than the reservation market generally. The audience figure combines Yelp with a Google surface rather than isolating Yelp. And the data is two years old at the point of citation.
None of that makes the claim false within its stated terms. It does mean the phrase carries less weight than an unqualified reading would suggest, and the qualification appears only in a footnote below the fold.
Where Yelp's AI citations actually concentrate
A second claim in the post concerns organic visibility. Yelp describes itself as the most cited home services discovery platform, with a 3.4 times lead in citations over its nearest competitor across major AI platforms, and says this gives businesses on the platform "a meaningful visibility advantage."
PPC Land analysed that dataset when Foundation Marketing and AirOps published it on May 30, 2026. The research covered more than 28 million AI responses across ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Mode in the fourth quarter of 2025, and recorded 512,680 Yelp citations against 149,710 for the Better Business Bureau in second place, with Angi third at 145,633.
The platform-level split is the part that bears on this announcement. Roughly 340,721 of those citations, about 66 percent, came from Google AI Mode. Perplexity contributed 146,196. ChatGPT and Gemini together supplied just over 25,700. Yelp's citation lead is real within its comparison set of six local directories, and it is thinnest on precisely the platform where the new booking integration now sits.
That is not a contradiction so much as a strategic reading. A licensing agreement and a transaction rail are two ways of buying presence on a surface where organic presence is weakest.
The wider distribution list
ChatGPT is one entry in a longer list. According to the post, platforms delivering Yelp-powered recommendations and task completion include Apple Maps, Amazon's Alexa+, Microsoft Bing, DuckDuckGo, Yahoo and unnamed automotive brands, with capabilities spanning reservations, waitlist joins and quote requests from service providers.
That distribution strategy has been assembled in stages. Yelp's October 2025 fall release introduced Yelp Host, Menu Vision and Yelp Receptionist alongside more than 35 platform features. The April 2026 spring release moved booking, ordering and scheduling inside Yelp Assistant across more than 450 categories, adding third-party scheduling integrations with Vagaro, Zocdoc and Calendly. In January 2026, Yelp acquired the lead management platform Hatch for approximately $270 million in cash plus $30 million in employee retention payments.
Read together, those moves describe a company converting a review corpus into infrastructure that other interfaces call, rather than defending a destination that users visit directly.
Google is building the same layer from the opposite side
The competitive picture matters because Google has been assembling comparable capability for longer, and with a different architecture.
Agentic restaurant booking reached United States users in November 2025 as part of a travel planning expansion, querying OpenTable, Resy and Tock for real-time availability. In April 2026, the feature arrived in the United Kingdom with eight partner platforms: TheFork, SevenRooms, ResDiary, Mozrest, Foodhub, Dojo, DesignMyNight and OpenTable. Later that month, Google search chief Nick Fox described the mechanism publicly, noting that the booking finalises through the partner platform rather than inside Google. And in August 2026, Google Maps gained food ordering through Square and Toast.
Two models are now visible. Google operates as a meta-aggregator that fans out across booking systems and hands the transaction back to whichever platform holds the inventory. Yelp is supplying a single booking rail into a conversational interface that has no reservation inventory of its own. The first arrangement puts Yelp alongside its competitors in a ranked list. The second puts Yelp inside the interface.
The precedent for in-chat transactions is mixed
The record of closing transactions inside a chat window is short and uneven.
OpenAI launched Instant Checkout with Stripe on September 29, 2025, built on the Agentic Commerce Protocol and initially limited to single-item purchases in the United States. The feature was discontinued in March 2026. Walmart's publicly disclosed data was the reason cited: conversion rates for products sold directly inside the chatbot ran three times lower than for purchases requiring a click out to Walmart's own site.
Restaurant reservations are not retail carts. A table booking involves no payment, no shipping and no cart abandonment in the conventional sense, and the friction profile is different. But the underlying question is the same one Walmart's numbers raised, and it remains open: whether removing the click improves completion, or removes the step where users confirm what they are agreeing to.
Adoption data on the broader standards layer offers little comfort either. An Originality.ai study published in May 2026 found only 26 public websites had implemented the Universal Commerce Protocol out of more than three million scanned.
Why this matters for the marketing community
For restaurant operators, the practical change is that a booking can now originate in an interface they do not control, cannot see into, and have no reporting relationship with. Yelp Guest Manager will show the reservation. What produced it is another matter. The post says nothing about whether ChatGPT-originated bookings will be distinguishable in Guest Manager reporting.
For advertisers, the relevant context is that ChatGPT is simultaneously becoming an advertising surface. OpenAI opened its Ads Manager to United States businesses with cost-per-click bidding on May 5, 2026, and ads have since expanded into European markets. A conversational surface that carries both sponsored placements and a native booking rail raises questions about ranking, disclosure and whether paid participation will eventually influence which restaurants surface ahead of a reservation prompt. Neither company has addressed that.
For publishers weighing licensing deals with model providers, the Yelp sequence is instructive precisely because of the gaps. Seventeen days separate a content licence from a transaction integration, and across both announcements there is no disclosed price, no traffic attribution and no conversion reporting. That is the shape of most such agreements at present, and it is the reason ChatGPT's earlier addition of location sharing mattered to local search operators well before any booking rail existed.
Yelp's own stated position is unchanged. According to Chad Richard, the aim is to "connect people with great local businesses through trustworthy information" wherever people ask for recommendations. The post closes by saying more is coming.

Summary
Who: Yelp, through a blog post authored by Chad Richard, senior vice president of business and corporate development, in partnership with OpenAI. Restaurants using Yelp Guest Manager are the businesses directly affected, alongside ChatGPT users seeking local recommendations.
What: Yelp Reservations and Waitlist became available inside ChatGPT, allowing users to book a table or join a waitlist without leaving the chat. Reservation changes are handled through Yelp. The feature builds on a content integration that already surfaces Yelp reviews, ratings, photos and business details in ChatGPT responses. No commercial terms, restaurant counts or attribution mechanics were disclosed.
When: August 10, 2026. The announcement follows the July 24, 2026 licensing of Yelp reviews, photos and business information to OpenAI by seventeen days, and Yelp's second quarter results on August 6, 2026 by four days.
Where: Restaurants across the United States and Canada, described by Yelp as thousands of top locations. The supporting Comscore claim about the largest restaurant consumer network is limited to the United States, based on 2024 data, and compares Yelp and Reserve with Google collectively against other Reserve with Google integrations.
Why: Yelp cites Morning Consult research finding that 65 percent of respondents consider the ability to take action on trusted platforms important when using AI tools for local discovery, alongside figures showing 65 percent AI search usage against 15 percent high trust and 72 percent wanting source disclosure. Commercially, the move extends distribution at a point when Yelp's restaurant and retail advertising revenue is falling and its subscription and licensing revenue is growing, and it places a transaction rail on the AI platform where Yelp's organic citation share is weakest.
