Comcast today announced the launch of The Network, a new free ad-supported streaming app featuring exclusive original content, across its entertainment platforms including Xfinity X1, Flex, Xumo Stream Box, and Xumo TV. This move comes as part of Comcast's ongoing efforts to expand its streaming offerings and reach diverse audiences.

The Network was created by Aram Rappaport, founder of creative agency The Boathouse, with actor John Leguizamo as an equity partner. The platform aims to simplify the streaming experience by offering a curated selection of premium original series.

One of The Network's flagship shows is "The Green Veil," an eight-episode drama series executive produced by and starring Leguizamo. Set in the 1950s, the show follows a government agent uncovering secrets about attempts to separate Indigenous children from their families. To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and The Network's debut on Xfinity, "The Green Veil" will be offered ad-free to Xfinity customers from September 16 to October 15.

According to Loren Hudson, SVP and Chief Diversity Officer at Comcast, "This partnership with John Leguizamo and The Network highlights Xfinity's ongoing commitment to connecting audiences with content that speaks to their unique interests." The launch aligns with Comcast's recent introduction of NOWTV Latino, which provides Hispanic entertainment options for customers.

The Network's content lineup also includes "Chivalry," a comedy series featuring Steve Coogan, and "Kingdom of Dreams," a docuseries about the high fashion industry. Comcast plans to position The Network as a complement to its premium streaming service Peacock and leverage its streaming technology and distribution partnerships.

Industry analysts note the growing importance of reaching Hispanic audiences. Research from McKinsey indicates U.S. Latinos account for over $3 trillion of GDP and represent a significant portion of box office and streaming subscribers.

Comcast's acquisition of The Network follows its February 2020 purchase of Xumo, another free ad-supported streaming television (FAST) service. These moves demonstrate Comcast's strategy to expand its streaming portfolio and compete with services like ViacomCBS's Pluto TV and Fox Corporation's Tubi.

The launch of The Network also comes as Comcast faces challenges in other areas of its business. The company reported a 37% decline in third-quarter net profits in 2020, partly due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on its theme parks and movie theaters.
