Specs are augmented reality glasses made by Specs Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Snap Inc., the company behind Snapchat. They place digital objects, screens and text on top of the wearer's view of the real world through transparent lenses, with the processor, battery, cameras and speakers built into the frame rather than into a tethered phone or a pocket unit. Snap's own materials usually style the name in capitals, as SPECS. The product exists because Snap wants a device that could one day take over some of the work of the smartphone. The company said in June 2025 that it had spent 11 years and more than $3 billion building it, according to its newsroom.

Priced at $2,195, Specs are due to ship in autumn 2026 in the United States, the United Kingdom and France. No advertising format exists for them yet. They matter to marketers anyway, because they are the first priced attempt by a large platform to move an established augmented reality (AR) ad business from the phone to the face.

How Specs work

The display is the core component. Each lens holds a waveguide, a thin transparent optic that carries light from a small projector through the glass and releases it towards the eye, a mechanism covered in PPC Land's explainer on waveguides. Snap describes its waveguide as containing billions of nanostructures. The projectors are liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) microdisplays developed in-house and capable of 16 million colours, according to UploadVR, which reported that Snap declined to disclose their resolution.

The visible canvas measures 51 degrees diagonally. Snap likens it to a 115-inch screen about ten feet away. That figure, a field of view, sets how large digital objects can appear before they are cut off at the edge of the lens. It compares with 46 degrees on the 2024 developer model and 20 degrees on the monocular display of Meta's Ray-Ban Display.

Two Qualcomm Snapdragon chips share the work. One runs the operating system and applications; the other handles computer vision, meaning head and hand tracking, mapping of surfaces and the anchoring of virtual objects in place, according to UploadVR. Snap claims a motion-to-photon latency, the delay between a head movement and the updated image, of 7 milliseconds, against 13 on the developer kit. Electrochromic lenses darken outdoors and can turn opaque in about ten seconds.

Physically, the frames are made of TR90 polymer and come in two sizes weighing 132 grams and 136 grams. Snap quotes four hours of mixed use per charge, and the case holds four further charges. Input relies on hand gestures and voice.

Software runs as Lenses, the sandboxed apps Snap also uses on Snapchat. The operating system, called Snap OS and referred to as SPECS OS in the September release, is built on Android but does not accept installed Android packages or third-party engines such as Unity. Developers write Lenses in JavaScript or TypeScript in Lens Studio, according to UploadVR. Lenses are free to download. Developers earn through in-app payments or subscriptions.

Privacy is handled partly in hardware. According to Snap, one processor interprets the surroundings while another runs experiences, and a Lens must ask before receiving raw camera, microphone or precise location data. The glasses do not continuously record, and a central LED plus a shutter sound signal capture. Snap says Specs do not use facial recognitionto identify people.

The commercial package was set out on September 16, 2026: a $2,395 bundle with a cellular charging case, Verizon data plans from $10 a month for its customers, Orange in France and EE in the United Kingdom, and SPECS Intelligence, an assistant that runs across iPhone, Mac and the glasses.

From camera sunglasses to a face computer

The lineage runs through a product called Spectacles. Snap announced it in September 2016 alongside its renaming from Snapchat Inc. to Snap Inc., a self-described camera company, according to the Victoria and Albert Museum, which later collected a pair. Released on November 10, 2016 at $130 and sold first through pop-up vending machines, the glasses recorded short circular videos. They had no display.

Demand faded fast. In its third-quarter 2017 filing, Snap booked $39.9 million of Spectacles charges, made up of $19.5 million in excess inventory reserves, $17.9 million in purchase commitment cancellations and $2.5 million in asset impairments, according to its Form 10-Q. A second version followed in April 2018. In August 2019, Snap launched Spectacles 3, with two cameras to capture depth, at $380.

The shift to true AR came in May 2021. The fourth generation, given only to selected creators, offered a 26-degree field of view and 30 minutes of battery, according to UploadVR. Days later Snap agreed to buy WaveOptics, the British supplier of its waveguides, for more than $500 million, according to CNBC.

On September 17, 2024 the fifth generation arrived, with Snap OS, a 46-degree view and 226 grams of weight, rented to developers at $99 a month. Within a month, Snap showcased the first developer-built Lenses, and in February 2025 the hardware was demonstrated in India for the first time.

The consumer name came at the Augmented World Expo in June 2025. On January 28, 2026 the business moved into Specs Inc., a structure Snap said would allow minority investment and a clearer valuation. By May, reporting had the product heading for an autumn launch at around $2,500. Evan Spiegel, Snap's co-founder and chief executive, unveiled the device at the same expo on June 16, 2026 at $2,195, with pre-orders opening against a $200 refundable deposit, according to CNBC and UploadVR.

Why Specs matter to marketers

Snap already runs one of the largest AR ad businesses. When it launched Sponsored AI Lenses in April 2025, the company said more than 300 million users engaged with AR daily. Specs run the same Lens format, built in the same tool, which gives Snap a route to carry sponsored formats onto glasses if it chooses. Lens creation for Specs rose 28% year on year, Snap stated in its first-quarter 2026 letter, as recorded in PPC Land's explainer on augmented reality.

Measurement rules already exist. The IAB and the Media Rating Council (MRC) published AR guidelines in April 2024 requiring the visible ad to cover at least 1.5% of the screen and sit at no more than 55 degrees to it. Those tests use a screen as the reference plane, not a lens.

Commerce appears before advertising. Snap is using the Shopify Catalog to let wearers place products at full scale in a room. It has also said personal content from accounts connected to SPECS Intelligence will not be used for personalised ads, a narrower promise than a general exclusion of ad targeting on the glasses.

Revenue context sets expectations. Advertising supplied about 80% of Snap's second-quarter 2026 revenue, and on the earnings call Spiegel said mass-market adoption would come towards the end of the decade, citing weight and cost.

Limitations and disputes

Price is the first constraint. At $2,195, Specs cost more than 15 times the original Spectacles, and Snap has lost money in every year as a public company, according to CNBC. Weight is the second: 132 grams against roughly 50 grams for Ray-Ban Meta glasses, according to UploadVR.

Disclosure is thin. UploadVR described the four-hour battery figure as effectively meaningless because AR experiences draw far more power than audio playback, and Snap declined to name its chips or give horizontal and vertical fields of view. Sources also disagree on the larger frame: Snap's September materials list 52mm, while UploadVR reported 51mm.

Bystander privacy is the most contested issue. A September 10, 2026 report by Hamburg's data protection commissioner found the recording light on Ray-Ban Meta glasses often too dim for bystanders to notice. Snap calls its own LED prominent, but no independent test has been published, and its materials do not address how the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) household exemption applies. PPC Land had raised the advertising side of camera glasses in 2024.

Specs and adjacent terms

Spectacles. Snap's earlier camera glasses and its AR developer kits. Specs is the consumer successor and runs the same operating system.

Specs Inc. and SPECS Intelligence. The first is the subsidiary; the second is an AI service that works without the glasses, since its iOS preview runs on a phone.

Smart glasses and display glasses. Ray-Ban Meta models, which reached four more European countries in November 2024, carry cameras and speakers but no display. Meta Ray-Ban Display, opened to developers in May 2026, adds a small fixed panel in one lens rather than objects anchored in a room.

Specs, lower case. In advertising, "specs" usually means creative specifications: the sizes, formats and file weights a platform accepts.

Recent developments

The Los Angeles event on September 16, 2026 added enterprise partners. Salesforce is bringing Agentforce to the glasses, Amazon Web Services is linking them to Amazon Quick, and NVIDIA is supplying agents built on its XR AI stack. Snap said it is working with vendors of mobile device management so companies can run fleets, without naming them.

SPECS First Look, a demonstration space at Westfield Century City in Los Angeles, opens on October 1. Meta holds Connect on September 23 and 24, and Google has said a display-equipped Android XR model is planned for 2027. On phones, Snap also sells AR through its Lens+ subscription tier. Whether either model reaches glasses depends on how many pairs sell.
