According to a new study published in the CHI Conference proceedings in April 2025, knowledge workers using generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Copilot experience significant changes in how they think critically about their work. The research, conducted by Microsoft Research and Carnegie Mellon University, surveyed 319 professionals who regularly use AI tools in their jobs.
The study reveals that higher confidence in AI capabilities correlates with reduced critical thinking effort, while workers more confident in their own abilities engage in deeper analysis despite perceiving it as requiring more effort. This dynamic highlights the complex relationship between human expertise and AI assistance in modern workplaces.
The researchers collected 936 real-world examples of AI tool usage across different professions. According to the study's lead author Hao-Ping Lee from Carnegie Mellon University, knowledge workers primarily engage with critical thinking to ensure work quality and avoid negative outcomes. "When users have higher confidence in AI doing the tasks, they invest less effort in critical evaluation," Lee notes.
The study documents three major shifts in how professionals approach cognitive tasks when using AI tools. For information-related work, effort moves from gathering data to verifying AI outputs. In problem-solving scenarios, focus shifts from direct solutions to integrating AI suggestions. For analysis and evaluation tasks, workers transition from hands-on execution to oversight and quality control.
This evolution brings new challenges. According to the research data, 83 of 319 participants reported that trust and reliance on AI tools discouraged them from critical reflection. Time pressure also emerged as a significant factor, with 44 participants citing lack of time as a barrier to thorough evaluation of AI outputs.
The research identifies specific obstacles knowledge workers face when trying to think critically about AI-generated content. According to the study findings, 58 participants reported difficulties in verifying AI responses due to limited domain knowledge. Additionally, 72 workers encountered challenges in improving AI outputs even after identifying limitations.
The study found that professionals in roles requiring higher accuracy, such as legal work and healthcare, maintain more rigorous verification practices. For example, one pharmacist participant reported carefully reviewing AI-generated professional development documents due to potential regulatory consequences.
The findings suggest broader implications for workplace skill development. The researchers observed that when workers rely on AI for routine tasks, they may lose opportunities to develop and maintain critical thinking abilities through regular practice. This phenomenon mirrors what the study terms the "Ironies of Generative AI," building on earlier automation research.
Looking at specific cognitive activities, the research showed varying impacts across different types of thinking. For basic recall and comprehension tasks, 72% of participants reported decreased effort when using AI tools. However, for evaluation tasks, only 55% reported reduced effort, indicating that higher-order thinking still requires substantial human engagement.
The study's authors recommend that organizations develop strategies to maintain critical thinking capabilities while leveraging AI benefits. They suggest implementing structured evaluation frameworks and providing explicit guidance on when and how to apply critical analysis to AI outputs.
