Google updates Gambling Advertising Policy in Romania for April 2024

Google this week announced significant updates to its Gambling and Games policy in Romania, scheduled to take effect on April 5, 2024. These changes are designed to align with evolving gambling regulations and certification requirements in the country.

Key Policy Changes:

Romanian License Mandate: To advertise online gambling services (casino games, sports betting, bingo, lotteries, etc.), advertisers will be required to hold a valid license from the Romanian National Office for Gambling (ONJN) and obtain certification from Google.
Increased Restrictions: Google Ads will no longer allow online gambling-related products (vouchers, educational materials, tips) to be advertised without the advertiser holding a valid ONJN license and obtaining certification from Google.
Enforcement and Recertification:
- Advertisers without a Romanian license or equivalent approvals will face the revocation of their gambling certificates and lose eligibility to serve ads in Romania as of April 5th.
- Existing advertisers who were previously certified without ONJN documentation must re-apply for certification, submitting the required ONJN license.
