TikTok takes over YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger worldwide on iOS

Sensor Tower last week announced that TikTok, the short-form video social networking app Beijing’s Bytedance, was the first most installed app on iOS during the year 2018.

This is based on Sensor Tower’s Store Intelligence estimates: TikTok added 75 million new users worldwide across the App Store and Google Play last month, representing year-over-year growth of 275 percent from 20 million in December 2017.

While TikTok has grown its user base substantially outside of China over the past year, there is one region in particular that has witnessed especially significant growth, and that is India. Accounting for 27 percent of new TikTok installs between December 2017 and last month, the country has seen downloads of the app increase nearly 25x during that time, from 1.3 million to 32.3 million.

TikTok revenue from in-app purchases—used for tipping live streamers—has also grown considerably, reaching $6 million spent by users worldwide last month, up close to 253 percent year-over-year from the previous December’s total of $1.7 million.
