YouTube unveiled a new feature called "Hype" on September 18, 2024, as part of a series of product updates announced at the Made on YouTube event. The feature, designed to support emerging creators, allows viewers to actively promote videos from smaller channels, potentially increasing their visibility on the platform.

According to YouTube's product team, Hype was developed in response to feedback from creators with smaller audiences who faced challenges in reaching new viewers. The feature introduces a novel way for fans to rally around content creators they believe in, going beyond traditional likes and shares.

Jessica Locke, Product Manager at YouTube, explained the mechanics of the new tool: "Hyping is available for videos less than 7 days old from creators with under 500,000 subscribers. Users can 'hype' a video up to three times per week, with plans to introduce purchasable additional hypes in the future."

The Hype system operates on a point-based leaderboard, where hyped videos climb rankings based on user engagement. A weekly top 100 list showcases the most hyped content, potentially exposing these videos to a broader audience. To ensure fairness, YouTube has implemented a "small creator bonus," which applies a point multiplier to channels with fewer subscribers.

Key features of the Hype system

  1. A 7-day window for hyping new videos
  2. Limit of three hypes per user per week
  3. Weekly leaderboards for each country
  4. Special badges for top hyped videos
  5. Potential for additional revenue through purchasable hypes

The development of Hype was driven by user research. YouTube surveyed over 2,500 viewers aged 18-45 from the United States, Japan, and Germany. The results showed that more than 75% of respondents, and over 80% of Gen Z viewers, expressed a desire to help small and medium-sized creators grow their channels.

Initial beta tests conducted in Turkey, Taiwan, and Brazil yielded promising results. In the first four weeks, users hyped over 5 million times across more than 50,000 unique channels. The largest age group engaging with the feature was 18 to 24-year-olds, comprising over 30% of all beta users.

The product team explored various concepts during the development process, including 24-hour hype windows and comment cheering systems. However, user feedback led to the current iteration, which balances simplicity with effectiveness.

Locke emphasized that Hype is designed to complement, not replace, existing discovery mechanisms on YouTube. "Hyping videos won't influence your YouTube recommendations and search results," she clarified.

The introduction of Hype comes at a time when creator economies are increasingly important across social media platforms. YouTube's approach aims to differentiate itself by focusing on sustained growth for smaller creators rather than viral, short-term success.

Industry analysts noted that the success of Hype would depend on user adoption and its impact on creator growth. Sarah Chen, a digital media analyst at TechTrends Research, stated, "The concept is intriguing, but its effectiveness will be determined by how well it integrates into users' viewing habits and whether it genuinely helps smaller creators break through."

YouTube plans to expand Hype to new markets based on learnings from the beta tests. The company has not provided a specific timeline for global rollout but indicated that updates would be made based on ongoing user feedback.
