Know how Facebook Search works and the signals used

Facebook last week produced a video on how Facebook search works. Yee Lee, Product Manager at Facebook, wrote that  "whatever users search for on the rest of the internet will not influence what you see when you search on Facebook."

Signals used in Facebook Search include:

  • What the friends share with a user
  • Pages a user follow
  • Groups a user joined
  • Events a user liked or followed
  • Things that a user interacted in the Newsfeed
  • Information that the user listed on the profile
  • Places a user has been tagged
  • Previous searches

The Facebook search results are also based on general Facebook community activity, including the popularity of whatever you’re searching for and how recently it was posted.
