Amazon MGM Studios has set November 23, 2026 as the launch date for New Wave, a four-part documentary series on MGM+ about the music genre and the decade from 1977 to 1987, according to the series page on the company's press site. The page carries no publication date. It lists the series as Season 1, names Douglas Tirola as director and writer, and gives the United States as the only country of availability.
In Short
Amazon's MGM+ streaming service will release a four-part documentary about New Wave music on November 23, 2026. It is an ad-free paid service that sits alongside Prime Video, not inside its ad-supported tier, so the series reaches viewers who pay extra rather than the wider audience Amazon sells to advertisers. The practical change is a new title in the Thanksgiving week schedule, available in the United States according to Amazon's own press page.

What the press page says
The series page sits on press.amazonmgmstudios.com, the press portal Amazon MGM Studios runs for journalists. In the site's navigation, the MGM+ section is the one highlighted, which places New Wave in the MGM+ slate rather than among Prime Video originals. The page is split into three tabs: About, Assets and Credits. The About and Credits tabs carry the text; the Assets tab holds downloadable material for press.
The About section describes the premise in a single paragraph. "This series tells the fascinating story of New Wave music and the decade from 1977 to 1987 that brought alternative culture into the mainstream," according to the page. It continues that "the four-part series will take us on a journey through the rise of New Wave from its rebellious origins to its influential impact on music, fashion, and pop culture."
The paragraph closes with the series' thesis. New Wave, according to the page, "defined a generation and reshaped the musical landscape in part by embracing women, the queer community and new technology while in the process creating a legacy that is still influencing us today."
That is the full extent of the editorial description. The page does not give episode titles, running times, a release cadence or a premiere hour. Whether all four parts arrive on November 23 or roll out weekly is not stated. November 23, 2026 falls on a Monday, three days before Thanksgiving in the United States.
Key art
The promotional image on the page shows the title in cyan lettering against a starfield, with "Premieres Nov 23" beneath it. Stacked to the right is a pile of old television sets, each screen carrying a band name: The Go-Go's, Duran Duran, Stray Cats, Billy Idol, The B-52's, Talking Heads, The Police and Devo are fully legible, while partially visible screens show Violent Femmes, Tears for Fears and Simple Minds. The key art does not say which of those acts appear in the series, or in what capacity.
Trade coverage fills part of that gap. Vital Thrills, reporting on October 20, 2026 when MGM+ released the official trailer and key art, listed interviewees including Billy Idol, John Taylor of Duran Duran, Stewart Copeland of The Police, Mark Mothersbaugh of Devo, Kathy Valentine of The Go-Go's, Kate Pierson and Fred Schneider of The B-52's, Chris Frantz of Talking Heads, Curt Smith of Tears for Fears, Jim Kerr of Simple Minds, Johnny Marr of The Smiths, Danny Elfman of Oingo Boingo, Bob Geldof and Thomas Dolby. The same report names MTV's Mark Goodman and Martha Quinn, music journalist Matt Pinfield and Miles Copeland of IRS Records. None of these names appears in the text of Amazon's press page.
Credits
The Credits tab sets out who made the series, and it is more detailed than the summary on the About tab. Douglas Tirola is listed as both director and writer, in each case with the affiliation 4th Row Films. The About tab lists him as director without the company name.
Executive producers are named as Elise Pearlstein, RJ Cutler, Trevor Smith, Mark Blatty and Margaret Yen of This Machine Filmworks; Douglas Tirola and Susan Bedusa of 4th Row Films; David Blackman and Madeline Post of Polygram Entertainment; and Tess Ranahan, for whom the page gives no company. Under "Company," the page lists This Machine Filmworks and 4th Row Films, with Polygram Entertainment credited "in association with."
Polygram's involvement matters to how a series like this gets made. PolyGram was one of the major record groups of the period the series covers, and music documentaries depend on licensed recordings and archive footage. The press page does not say which recordings or footage are licensed, and it does not describe Polygram Entertainment's role beyond the "in association with" credit and the two executive producer listings.
Vital Thrills also lists Richard Blade, the DJ, as a consulting producer. That credit is not on the Amazon press page's Credits tab.
The press contact listed is Eileen Quast, with an amazon.com email address, meaning the publicity is handled in-house rather than through an outside agency.
Where the series will be available
The press page lists "United States" under Country Availability, and nothing else. That is narrower than some of the coverage. Advanced Television, which reported the series on October 6, 2026, wrote that it would premiere on MGM+ in the UK on November 23. Amazon's page is the US edition of the portal, as its country selector shows, so the two accounts may simply reflect different regional listings. Amazon's page does not mention the UK.
According to Advanced Television, Tirola framed the series around adolescence and acceptance: he described music discovered in the teenage years as holding a special place, set New Wave apart from punk by its desire to be included, and said the story was about people fighting to be accepted as individuals.
MGM+ and the advertising question
New Wave lands on the one part of Amazon's video business that carries no advertising. MGM+ is the premium network that relaunched under that name from Epix in January 2023. Amazon describes it as "all ad-free and on demand" on its consumer page, which was updated on September 21, 2026, and prices it in the US at $7.99 a month or $61.99 a year. The service can be bought on its own or added as a channel inside Prime Video, and Amazon says it is offered in more than 30 countries.
That puts it on the opposite side of a line Amazon has spent nearly three years drawing. Prime Video began showing ads by default to US members in January 2024, turning a subscription service into one of the largest pools of ad-supported streaming inventory in the market. In March 2026, Amazon said it would replace the $2.99 ad-free add-on with Prime Video Ultra at $4.99 a month from April 10, a 67% increase in the price of avoiding ads. Amazon has told advertisers that Prime Video reaches 315 million ad-supported viewers worldwide on average.
MGM+ titles do not feed that number. The service runs on a pure subscription model, the SVOD structure that Prime Video itself has moved away from in favour of a hybrid with AVOD inventory at its core. For advertisers, that means New Wave is not inventory they can buy against, however much its audience of viewers raised on 1980s pop overlaps with the demographics media buyers pay for. For Amazon, MGM+ is a revenue line driven by subscription fees and channel distribution, not by ad loads.
How MGM got here
The structure is a legacy of the deal. Amazon paid $8.5 billion for MGM, a transaction cleared unconditionally by the European Commission and closed in March 2022. At the time, PPC Land reported that MGM brought more than 4,000 film titles and 17,000 television episodes, and that it already operated MGM+ as a wholesale channel in several European countries through Prime Video, Zattoo and Mediaset.
Since then, Amazon has kept MGM+ as a separate branded service rather than folding its programming into Prime Video. Recent MGM+ unscripted titles listed on Wikipedia's record of the network's originals, such as Let the Devil In in 2025 and The Hillside Strangler in January 2026, also ran as four-episode docuseries.
A crowded November
New Wave arrives in the busiest stretch of Amazon's video calendar. Prime Video's 2026 upfront presentation set November 11 for the third season of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. The Chosen begins its sixth season on Prime Video on November 15, and the biopic Madden premieres on November 18. Those titles sit in Prime Video's ad-supported default tier. New Wave, a week later, sits behind a separate paywall.
The timing places the premiere in the week of Thanksgiving and Black Friday, the period when ad-supported streaming inventory is most in demand. The series itself will not carry ads. Whether MGM+ uses the holiday week to push subscriptions, inside Prime Video's channel store or on its own app, is not addressed in any of the material.
What the documents do not say
Several details that would usually accompany a premiere announcement are absent from Amazon's page. There is no release cadence, no episode length, no list of interviewees, no mention of licensed music, and no statement from Amazon MGM Studios or MGM+ executives. The page is undated. The country listing names only the United States, while trade coverage reports a UK premiere on the same day. Production company names are spelled "Polygram" on the press page and "PolyGram" in some trade coverage.
The trailer, released on October 20 according to Vital Thrills, is not linked from the text of the press page.
