YouTube Premium Lite launches in US
YouTube introduces a budget-friendly tier for viewers who want ad-free content without music features.

YouTube has officially launched its Premium Lite subscription tier in the United States, seven days after the announcement was made on March 5, 2025. The new offering provides users with an ad-free viewing experience for most content at $7.99 per month, significantly less than the standard Premium plan priced at $13.99 monthly.
According to Jack Greenberg, Director of Product Management for YouTube Premium, the company has been testing Premium Lite in multiple international markets before bringing it to American viewers. "We've been testing Premium Lite to make sure we have the right balance of features and benefits for those viewers who want to watch most videos ad-free – whether it's gaming, comedy, cooking or learning," Greenberg stated in the official announcement.
The new tier represents a strategic middle ground for YouTube's subscription offerings. Premium Lite removes advertisements from most YouTube content, including gaming videos, tutorials, podcasts, and other creator-focused material. However, it maintains certain limitations compared to the full Premium experience.
Johanna Vujlich, Chief Product Officer at YouTube, explained the reasoning behind the new tier during a recent "Release Notes" interview. "When we talk to our users, what we found is there a whole swath of people who want an ad-free, uninterrupted streaming service but they don't necessarily want a music service," Vujlich said. "That's where we got the idea of Premium Lite."
The limited offering means Premium Lite subscribers will still encounter advertisements when watching music videos, using the YouTube Music app, and when browsing or searching on the platform. Additionally, key features from the standard Premium subscription are absent from the Lite version.
What's missing from Premium Lite
Premium Lite lacks several features that full Premium subscribers enjoy:
- No background play (videos stop when switching apps)
- No offline downloads for on-the-go viewing
- No ad-free experience on YouTube Music
- Ads remain on Shorts content
- Ads may still appear when searching or browsing
According to YouTube's support documentation, "With Premium Lite, you won't get ads on videos like gaming, fashion, beauty, news, and more. Ads however may appear on music content, Shorts, and when you search or browse."
Global expansion underway
The US launch of Premium Lite is part of a broader international rollout. YouTube confirmed the service will be available to all users in Thailand, Germany, and Australia in the coming weeks, all markets where the company had previously piloted the service.
This expansion coincides with significant growth in YouTube's subscription business. Vujlich revealed that YouTube Premium and YouTube Music combined have now reached 125 million subscribers globally, including trials. This represents substantial growth for the platform's subscription services.
Strategic positioning
Industry analysts note that Premium Lite fills an important gap in YouTube's pricing strategy. At $7.99 monthly, it positions between the free ad-supported tier and the $13.99 full Premium subscription, potentially attracting users who found the higher-priced option unaffordable but still desire an improved viewing experience.
Users commenting on the announcement have expressed mixed reactions. Some welcome the lower-priced option while others question why features like background play aren't included. One commenter named Morgrain noted, "The fact that companies these days want customers to reduce ads, not remove them is insane. It's a simple deal: I don't pay, I accept ads so the company gets revenue. I pay, I don't accept ads because they already get revenue from me."
Benefits for creators
The company emphasizes that Premium Lite creates additional revenue opportunities for content creators. While the specifics of the revenue-sharing model for Premium Lite haven't been disclosed, YouTube has confirmed that the expansion "continues to create additional revenue opportunities for our creators and partners."
For creators who focus primarily on non-music content, this could potentially expand their monetization options by tapping into viewers who were unwilling to pay for the full Premium package.
Part of a larger subscription strategy
Premium Lite represents just one component of YouTube's evolving subscription strategy. The company appears to be segmenting its offerings to target different user needs and price sensitivities.
"We want it to be somewhat simple," Vujlich explained about YouTube's tiered approach. "You can't have people have all kinds of different needs, but you don't want to have an infinite number of tiers because then it's pretty complex to understand."
She further elaborated on other subscription options: "We have people who really want a ton of things like downloading and backgrounding and music, and that's really our core premium offering. You have other people, people who are using Google services like G1, and so we have an offering that combines premium with G1. You have people who are in families, and so we have things like a family plan."
Future developments
Beyond Premium Lite, YouTube continues to develop exclusive features for its Premium subscribers. Vujlich highlighted AI-powered features like "ask music," which allows users to create playlists using natural language prompts, and an "AI conversational search feature" that enables viewers to interact with videos by asking questions about the content.
The company is also testing additional features at youtube.com/new, a site accessible exclusively to Premium subscribers. Among these experimental features is a speed control that would allow playback at up to 4x speed, according to Vujlich.
YouTube has indicated plans to expand Premium Lite to additional countries this year while continuing to refine its subscription offerings based on user feedback and market performance.
