YouTube today announced the expansion of its likeness detection feature to all eligible creators who are 18 years of age or older, widening access to a tool that was previously limited to channels enrolled in the YouTube Partner Program. The rollout, posted to the YouTube community forum today by Jensen of TeamYouTube, marks the largest deployment yet of what the company describes as an industry-first identity protection system built directly into YouTube Studio.

The announcement matters because it shifts the availability of a meaningful technical safeguard from a monetisation-gated audience to essentially the entire adult creator population on the platform. Until now, the ability to detect AI-generated or AI-altered videos featuring a creator's own face was reserved for Partner Program members. That restriction left a substantial segment of the creator base - those building channels, growing toward YPP eligibility, or simply uploading without monetisation - without any platform-native mechanism to identify when their likeness appeared in synthetic content posted by others.

What the tool actually does

According to YouTube's Help Center documentation, likeness detection is an experimental feature built into the Content detection section of YouTube Studio. Its core function is automated: the system performs a one-time scan of newly uploaded videos to identify content that potentially contains the face of each creator who has enrolled. The mechanism works in a manner similar to Content ID - YouTube's existing copyright enforcement infrastructure - except that it searches for a creator's facial likeness rather than copyrighted audio or video material.

When the system finds a potential match, the creator is notified and presented with a list of flagged videos under a "For review" tab. From there, three actions are available. A creator can submit a likeness removal request if the content appears to violate YouTube's Privacy Guidelines. They can submit a copyright removal request if their original copyrighted footage was used without permission. Or they can move the video to an archive, removing it from the active review queue while leaving it live on YouTube - with the option to revisit and file a complaint later.

The system currently covers only visual content. Audio detection - the ability to identify AI-cloned or AI-altered voice content - is not yet part of likeness detection. According to YouTube's Help Center, the company is "working to extend likeness detection to audio in 2026." For creators who find content featuring what sounds like their voice altered by AI, the existing privacy complaint process remains the only available route.

There is also a distinction between enrolled and non-enrolled individuals. The scanning system will detect faces of other people in videos during its search for enrolled creators' likenesses. However, according to the documentation, "the technology can only identify likeness for enrolled creators who have consented to using the feature and have submitted a reference of their face." The system may surface videos that feature an enrolled creator's genuine, unaltered face, including clips of their own YouTube videos uploaded by other channels. According to YouTube's documentation, "this content can't be removed under our privacy policies." In those cases, creators who believe a copyright violation has occurred can pursue a copyright removal request instead, provided fair use or a similar exception does not apply.

Once enrolment is complete, YouTube assigns a unique identifier to the creator's selfie video, their full legal name, and their likeness template. According to the Help Center documentation, this information is stored in YouTube's internal database for up to three years from the last time the creator signs into YouTube, unless they withdraw consent or delete their account. Turning off likeness detection at any time triggers deletion of that stored data.

Creators are also given an optional consent choice: they can allow YouTube to use their face and voice templates to develop and improve the likeness detection models that power the system for everyone.
